i want to check if there are any codes coming out of my ecu, but my gauge panel has no check engine light. i can buy one but it is too expensive.

how to i check for codes? i know the diagnostic box and short e1 and te1... but how do i see them codes?

engine is a hybrid 7age bigport map type.

You can hook up a test lamp via the diagnostics box. On my 2JZ the "Malfunction Indicator Lamp" pin is labelled W, and I assume it's the same for other Toyota engines.

So, just connect one end of the test lamp to the W pin, and the other to a +12v source (eg the battery terminal) and watch the flashy goodness.
