14x7 on an RA28 Tue, 14 January 2003 23:15 Go to next message
Will a set of 14x7 wheels fit on an RA28, or will they be too wide? Is there a limit to the offset of the wheels that can be fitted to an RA2x celica?

Yup.

The offset and diameter of the wheel will change the way the front suspension and steering works. Typically you can go up an inch in diameter and width, keeping the offset the same and you won't notice the difference.

Go too big and you will need to change the offset to keep everything working right. It may seem obvious but what most people forget is that the wheel and tyre are an integral part of the suspension of the car and changes can affect the handling, of the car, breaking performance and loads on parts (Not always improving on factory). Thats why you need an engineers certificate for changes greater than 1 in from standard.

As far as what your looking at, I think the standard size is 14x5.5, so 14x7 should be fine as long as they are the same offset as factory. I would even go for 15x6.5 or 15x7, you get a better choice of tyres with a 15in. rim.

How does tyre profile fit in with all this? I am looking for a wheel that is about 7 inches wide but that I can still get a decent amount of rubber on say 205/60's. I am looking at a deep-dish type rim ie a negative offset.

205/60x14's will fit nicely on an RA28. That's what I have on my RA23, on a 14x7 rim:

You are legally required to keep the rolling diameter of your tyres the same as the factory-fitted tyres, so a wider tyre requires a lower profile. 205/60's are pretty close to 175/70's.

Rala's Car is coping a set of Turbos the same as Norbies, but we a shoving 235/60r14 under the rear Evil or Very Mad
Which is 20mm bigger diameter, which is also a 3% speedo error Smile

CamZH, you have the same rims as norbie, what car are they off? I like them and want to try and find a set, but I need somewhere to start Smile btw Norbie, this is Damian, I emailed you the other night. Norbie said he thought they were off a Datsun.

I think they are just an after market wheel?
Mine are cheviot branded.
I bought them off Bugman.
I have only painted 1 so far...
http://members.optushome.com.au/manjuice/turbos.JPG

I have to strip the paint off another 1 and then paint the remaining 3...
how ever its a lot of hard work to mask them up!
I have thought about polising them, but i've kinda given up on that idea...

Mine originally came off a Datsun, but like I said, I don't know if they were an OEM fitment or aftermarket.

im running 14x7 rims on my RA40 but i have 215/60/14 rubber on them, this diameter is close to the factory 185/??/14 tyre.

(cant recall the 185 proflie from memory me at work atm)

anyways the front tyres scrub a litte full lock but rears are fine.

haha will 14X7's fit on an RA28? Well my smaller TA22 has 18x7's on the front and it's had 19x8-1/2's on the back! so i think some little 14's will fit quite nicely... I originally had 17x7's on and they fit no worries, bolted straight on. However with the 18's i had to slightly "mould" the inner guard (footwell) so that i could get full-lock when turning. Apart from that, they fit no worries, ohh and lipping the guards helps when your TA22 is dumped on it's arse with 18's, if you don't lip them, you'll find the car will probably do it for you... lol

Hey Andre'

Do you know what offset was on your 17's and what the tyre size was?

Was the suspension/brakes standard equipment or did it have to be modified to fit them in?

I bet the ride is pretty harsh with 18's on it, Hows the kidney's going Laughing

I am thinking of putting 16's on mine, should look cool.

Haha, i think it's about time for a kidney transplant... lol
Sorry i dunno what offset the 17's were, but they just fit without any mods, like just. the drivers side wheel just touched the footwell on full lock right but this was only for like 2 days then it had stopped, so it must have juuuuust been touching. Like the noise was so minor it wasn't worth worrying about, then sure enough it had bed itself in anyway. But the 18's needed the footwell to be beaten back by about 10mm to ensure no scrapage. I dunno what size tyres where on the 17's, but after the guards had been "fixed" i put a different set of 17's on (the ones in the pics on this forum) and they were FWD offset. So i had spacers on the front so they wouldn't foul the struts. The tyres on those were 205/40/R17's and they were fine, no probs. The 18's werealso 205's but they were 35series. And the 19's were off a mates Cordia so they were also fwd offset. My suspension is 35mm lowered king springs at the front, and the back springs were literally cut down to HALF the original height stock springs. The bumpstops were removed and replaced with this rubber sticker thingy so the car could go lower withought bottoming out as soon. But i still had to go around any bump i could see, otherwise "AYAAAAHHHHH head through the roof" lol

(ps I had 16 inch white F90 simmons on the car last year and it looked really good, yours will be nice.)
