so whats the big difference between them, i know, vvti and single turbo....
have heard rumours that the vvti's are unreliable....have a few probs,???
would the twin 1j be better with a single conversion then a vvti with a bigger single???

thats kinda dependant on the final level of tuning.
the vvti helps with the bottom end so i guess it MAY boost earlier.
being a newer engien, stronger / more refined parts?

The VVTi engines are also higher compression; 9.0:1 vs 8.5:1 for the older 1JZ's. This combined with the VVTi will spool up any given turbo much faster. It's no coincidence that the VVTi makes max torque 2000rpm sooner than the 1JZ!
I haven't heard anything bad about their reliability. The internal construction of the engine is much the same.

The only downside with the VVTi engines when it comes to modifications is (a) you need a high-end ECU to run the VVTi (eg Motec) and (b) there are fewer aftermarket cams available off the shelf. If you're OK with that the VVTi engine is definitely the way to go!

harder to get aftermarket turbo manifolds as well as the VVTI head has different port spacing than the non VVTI head...
also wouldnt it be food for thought to maybe spend the difference in price on a VVTI engine on a big single turbo/computer/set of cams on a non VVTI motor as the price difference can be quite large...

1JZ-GTE VVTi engines have a reputation for kicking rods in Japan, at much lower than expected power levels.
Restrictive AFM is a PITA to deal with as your stuck with it with the stock ECU due to VVTi control.
Headgasket apparently becomes marginal ~300rwkw unless tuning is spot on.
