Ignitor??

I know that this may sound stupid to some but being new to EFI i need to get my facts straight.
I am hooking up a 4agte and using a Wolf3d ecu and the 4agze wastespark coils. The installation manual shows the use of a "ignitor" between the coils and ecu. What is the use of the ignitor? and if I do need this what is my best option??

Yes, you will need an ignitor.
You will have to find out what ignitor the Wolf is happy running?? Try and get a GZE twin channel unit and use that, but some toyota ignitors are "Smart", this means that they do not require a dwell time (square wave). I am unsure if the Wolf can handle this. If the stock unit is no good, go bosch.
Here are the most likley options: These are dumb ignitors.
Bosch:
2 x 0227 100 008 = $100 each = $200
1 x 0227 100 200 = $130 each = $130
Siemens:
7700853731 Dual ignitor module = ???
Get the Bosch parts from Petroject nearest you.

The ignitor basically takes information from the ECU and tells the coil when and how to fire. It usually then sends a signal back to the ecu to confirm the spark.
I have a good artical about it if you want me to email it to you.

I have an Ignitor on my RA21 which uses a points type distributor. What does it do on a car where there is no ECU?

In Australia we don't have RA21's, but If it is anything like our early celicas which it more than likely is then it is what we would call a coil.
A Coil is just like a dirty big capacitor, you supply voltage, it builds up charge and fires it to the spark plug via the distributor. Nuthin fancy going on there.
I guess the term has somewhat evolved since 1970.

Actually, it has a seperate coil and the ignitor sits between the coil and the distributor. It is wired to both. I have no idea what it does.

there is only two things between the coil and distributor, one is the ignition lead which carries the main voltage to the plugs, the second is the wire which goes from the coil to the points inside the distributor which i would class as being an ignitor as this carries the signal from the points to the coil to say when and when not to charge, release power ect.

If I had a scanner I would post the picture from the manual. It shows and describes it as an ignitor but doesn't say what it does. I should have mentioned that the engine in my 73 has been swapped for another year 18R (which I can't check right now) by the previous owner who also put in a 5 speed , and Celicas after 75 had this ignitor between the coil and distributor.

Yes it will most likely be an ignitor, there's no reason you can't have one with points. The idea is to cut down the current running through the points and use a transistor instead, as well as allow the points to make a good spark even when they are in poor condition. Old school electronic ignition. Most likely fitted in places like Canada where things are a bit chilly and there'd be stuff all chance of getting anything with points to actually start in the morning.

So, if I swapped to electornic ignition (like a "Pertonix Ignitor" or a 22R electronic distributor) would I have to keep the ignitor or would it be redundant?
