18R perforfance

Hi Everyone
My daughter races an XT130 speedway car with an 18R in it.
Rules say stock motor with extractors and carby rejetting.
I think we have an early 18R but not sure. It has spring tensioner that screws in from the outside of the head on top timing chain, not the internal tensioner that sits between the chain.
Is the 18RC a better thing to start with.
What makes the RC lower in comprwssion.
Is there a mixture of bits from both motors that will help with a few more horsepower.
My manual says that the 18R is 113HP and the 18RC 97HP.
Is this because of lower comp or valve timing for smog control..
Any help would be great.

the 18RC's reduced performance certainly came (in part) from:
-smog equipment (air pump, EGR)
-compression
-ignition timing
-disabled carbi
am not sure whether the cam changed - i had mine reground to suit the turbo. only way would be to compare casting marks on early/late model cams.
i dont think the head changed much with the introuction of smog equipment. (note: 18RG pistons will not fit).
the external upper-chain tensioner is the one to get (older, but better)
would suggest:
-largish extractors (long primarys will help to a point)
-aggressive ignition timing (if you can keep fuel up to it)
-bigger spark (bigger ocil? a jaycar/DSE CDI unit would be good. or just the electronic spark from an 18RG)
-CAI (clean, cool air instead of engine bay heat
-remote oil-cooler (ford sandwich plate fits but you will need a shorter filter to prevent hitting the dizzi
-proper balance when rebuilding
-open up exhaust ports to suit extractors
chees, charles.

Thanks for that Charles..
Do the RC heads have a bigger chamber to lower comp or is it in the pistons.?

the 18RC have a smalle chamber but flat top pistons, and 18RG has a hemi head and dome tops

I picked up an 18-RU engine about 10 years, before i knew shit about toyota's. But this engine whent like stink! felt about twice as powerful as my previous 18-r and much much faster then friends 18-rc. Must of been worked, wish i knew.
Anyhow some guy ended up taking it off my hands and fucked it in no time, running leaded fuel in it when it was supposed to take unleaded. I didn't want to sell it, i dunno why i let that happen was a sweet piece of work that engine.

the 18R and 18RC have the same piston so any compression change is in the head.
there is a bit of excess meat in the combustion chamber as the head in my 18R-turbo was opened up to 7.4:1 .

surely you can stick a stock 18RG in. They go like stink with standard carbs, compression, cams etc. I suggest this cause i noticed you were racing an XT130, which never came with an R motor, rather a 1X series commodore crossfire motor. So if you are allowed to change to an 18R, surely you can use an 18RG. Toyota suggests 146hp for the 88230 headed motor with cast exhaust manifold and restrictive airbox. Add intake bellmouths, foam sock air cleaners and extractors, and you have a recipe for a motor which will run all day every day at high rpm, and produce funtastic power. As for electronic ignition, take the guts from a 21RC/22R dizzy, as well as the coil and ignitor from same. Ive heard about these motors being used for speedway cars before and running flat at 7000rpm all night every night without failure.
Cheers, Owen
