4AC overheating Wed, 15 January 2003 14:08 Go to next message
Howdy,

My 4A is overheating badly and I am slightly confused as to what the cause is. Firstly it boiled quite badly and quite possibly damaged the head gasket, yet it seems to have enough power and it is not loosing water or oil (not out exhaust etc).

The problem is that it heats up and the fans (electric) dont turn on, despite it been in danger zone. At first i thought it might be the fan sensor and swapped it off a working corolla (same model AE82, 4AC) as a test :/ but to my dispair it hasnt helped and the car still overheats and yet the fans dont turn on.

Now i have one conclusion, the thermostat. Now before I start work is it likely to be caused by anything else? i did the water pump 12 mnths ago so i doubt its that, a leaking head gasket wouldnt cause overheating without the fans on right?

Thx for ur time

The toyota system for the fans is quite unique, if the sensor fails then the fans stay on permanently. If the fans don't come on, the fan is stuffed or the wiring has a loose connection. You can check the fans by applying 12 volts directly the plug near the fan.

Check also the Fan relay, (and fuse if you haven't already) shorting fan relays can cause all sorts of weird behaviour.

Its not the fans unfortunately i tested that removing the fan sensor works 100% even when its overheating, so its gotta be either pump, head gasket (its not loosing water though) or the thermostat

I took the thermostat off and its clogged with crud from the head gasket redo (16 mnths ago) and looks rooted... the seal around it also was nomore so it would have been leaking quite badly...

Thx thermo will be done tommorrow :/ gotta replace the seal
