Hi all,
feel mildly dumb for asking this *tried a search but got nothing*
what manual trans would suit the 1j - and *hopefully* will fit in a ra23 without tooooo much modification?
Planning on running around 15psi boost so I was thinking I'd use the one from a jza70 supra? any thoughts??
Cheers all....

The Jza70 supra and jzz30 soarer both use a R154 5 speed. The soarer version is slightly longer I believe.
They are an extremely tough gearbox but are very large. I doubt it will fit in your Trans tunnel without some serious modification.

A W58 transmission from a non-turbo 1JZ-GE or 2JZ-GE will bolt up to a 1JZ-GTE, and it will fit nicely in an RA23 transmission tunnel. You will probably have to modify the shifter to bring it further forward, but apart from that it should be a pretty easy job. I had to do the same thing when I put a 2JZ-GE W58 in my MA61.
All 1JZ-GTE's came with an R154 from the factory, and as mentioned above they are very large transmissions - there's no way it will fit in an RA23 without extensive modifications to the transmission tunnel.

if u want to use a R154 in a RA23 you will have to make trans tunnel modifications, ie cut it out an weld in a bigger one.
otherwise a W58 from the back of a 2JZ-GE will fit in with no trans tunnel mods and the bellhousing will be correct as well.

Cheers all for the replies
Now I gotta go source a w58 :> *or at least cost them*
just one more small q? will the w58 hold 15psi ?? is that one of the tough as nails boxes that usually end up behind v8's??

The W58 is generically referred to as the "Supra 5-speed", and yes it's often used behind V8's. 15psi shouldn't be a problem for it in a light car like the RA23, as long as you don't abuse it too much. A friend of mine has one in an MA70 turbo which is running ~11psi, ie more torque than a 1JZ on 15psi and heaps more weight to haul around, and it seems to be holding up fine!

If you're worried about stripping your gears, you can always get the ratios strengthened and have metal straps put around the box to hold it together (honest, dad did that back in his wild and leadfoot days)
