18RGEU turbo modification laws in QLD. Thu, 16 January 2003 06:31 Go to next message
Is it legal in QLD to put a 18RGEU motor with a turbo added into a RA28 celica???

At the moment i have a 18RGU carb powered donk, and that needed a plate so it could be put in. Would the turbo and EFI conversion be acceptable??

I know i'd need a engineers cirtificate but even so, will the added turbo be allowed to pass roadworthy? I have seen RA28's with 1G's in them and they seem to be fine and legal, but im just making sure. If anyone out there has put a 18RGEU Turbo motor in their RA28/RA23, what other mods did you have to do to make it legal??? I think my brakes may have to be upgraded, but is there any other safety mods that will be needed to pass the roadworthy?

Any help would be muchly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Ben

You needed a plate for a twin cam upgrade??
When Rala's RA28 gets the 18RG i'll call the rta and give them the new engine number.

Sounds like you need to talk to an engineer.

You can legally install a 1JZ-GTE in Qld, so there shouldn't be any problem with a 2 litre turbo.

Of course forgies, big front mount, and a T04 will be on its way after this gets done. Smile

Its running stock compression, and i think i will be running about 10-12psi through the turby, does that sound ok??? Whats the 1J turbies limit? about 13-14psi i would have thought.

thanks
Ben

Without knowing the turbo specs it's hard to say (I don't think that's a stock 1JZ turbo), but I imagine it would be easy enough to get 300hp out of such a setup with proper tuning. Probably more, but 300 is a good conservative estimate.

The problem may lie with the aftermarket computer you'll fit. The EPA allows aftermarket on any car pre 1976 that complies with ADR 27. The only test required is a reading at idle with a max of 4% CO. If the engineer goes by the book you'll need to get an emissions carried out to ADR27a. This of course depends on the engineer; some request it, others don't.

As for 1J boost, the turbo's will easily produce 13 psi with a free flowing exhaust. For years we have been running boost limits on these motors at 16 psi without any problem.

It looks like a CT-20b off a VVTi 1JZ-GTE.

You will need a modification plate for the turbo addition if approved. Smile
