how much for 4a-lc? Mon, 21 November 2005 03:32 Go to next message
just wondering how much a normal running 4a-lc will cost...

if you wondering what the hell im going on about it is the front wheel drive version of the 4a-c thats in a ae82 corolla.

The question basically comes because my mate from work has one of these cars and to say the least his engine is far from useful Razz
he is currently thinking of swapping the engine for a better running one... or alternatively getting a 4age into there. But he's not too keen on spending lots of money so i guess the engine replacement will be the best option.

when talking to him today he told me that i wreckers said to him they will give him another 4a-lc engine for $440...

when i heard this a giant Wtf followed. If a normal 4ac is worth only $0 - $100 how can the front wheel drive version be worth that much... maybe if the engine was comming with a gearbox... but i doubt the wrecker was doing that

so how much should this engine be worth? and how hard are they to find?
also, what gearboxes do the ae82 rolla's with 4a-lc's have? do they have the same one as the versions that have a 4age?

thanks

- Grant

if your lucky you can find them for free. check the clasifieds on this forum.

im pretty sure any gearbox from all 4A blocks will blot onto the 4ac. so 4age 4agze and 4age 20v(silver, the black might be abit diff)

Laughing So true. Go with at least a 4age and dont bother with anything else (unless you want a gze or gte). There are halfcuts for like $1000 for the age's or just the engine for $700ish in decent condition...

yea its a fella from work who owns the car... he's a uni student... im pretty sure that says about as much as needed.

So i doubt a 4age or ze or 20v would be affordable

so i guess a 4alc is only worth as much as a normal 4ac would be worth? so i guess for a decent running 4alc he would be paying about $100 or so?

also, if anyone knows... is the gearbox in the ae82's the T50?
or like a front-wheel version of the T50?

cheers

i thought 4alc is the exact same thing as 4ac Confused

Both SOHC 8 valve 1.6L, and both with no guts. Why bother with a conversion, just tell him to save up and get a 4age

Almost all of the AE82:s sold here in Sweden have the 4A-C and C-50 tranny.
I've got this pile of leftover crap from my project in my garage.

I'd Go a 4AFC, 16V narrow head before getting a 4AC or 4ALC(same engine anyway!). They're around $400, so I think the wrecker may have been confused

yea they are the same thing, only diff is that the 4alc is for a front wheel drive chassis not rear wheel like the 4ac.

i know you guys think the best option would be 4age convertion, that would be my thoughts too... But the guys one of those fellas that says 'its just a car, gets me from point a to b'...

so yea, the idea of having a grunty 4age doesnt enthus him too much.

Basically if you asking why is he wanting to replace the engine, the engine is very gay. basically the car needs a newer engine and i think the engine thats in this bay is kinda beond repair Laughing

thanks for your help fellas

NO! DO NOT 4A-GE CONVERT THIS PILE!
If he wants a 4A-GE, tell him to get a Twincam AE82. It'll be cheaper and more reliable than converting a 4A-C AE82 to 4A-GE, and upgrading breaks ETC.

I'd get another one for cheap, drop it in, get the one your mate has and re-build it, then swap them back over and re-sell the temp engine, or keep it for spares or something. Or just find a good condition 4A-C. Should be able to find one for $300 or less. Still I don't think 4A-Cs last as long as most Toyota engines, and they're all getting a bit long in the tooth.

I'm pretty sure a few AE86's owners that have run their 4ac's without oil and water before a convo would beg to differ.

the 4ac is one of the tuffest engines, until you start tampering with it.
