What 14" tyres for AE86???

Hey all. I though it's about time I splash out on some NEW 14" tyres for my 86.
Im after a performace tyre that will have...
* Great turn-in and grip
* Cornering ability similar to a train on rails
* Good wet road abilities (silica or better compound)
* 55 or 60 profile
* 185 or 195 width
There isn't too much to choose from in the way of 14" tyres,
But I've broken the list down to 2 options...
* Bridgestone Potenza GIII
. (185/60R14)
. (195/60R14)
I have used G3s before, they are amazing tyres... but is ther better?
* Yokohama A539
. (185/50R14) {may cause ground clearance issues]
. (185/55R14) {as above}
. (195/60R14)
I haven't used these, but have heard great things.
What mileage can I expect to get from these tyres?
I am after a softer compound, but dont want them to have to replace them for at least 6 months.
I have also considered a few of the Kumho range (ecsta KH11 / 712 / 711) but am a bit unsure about these. Anyone had them?
Any help appreciated.

A539's were NLA in other than 60 profile for R14 sizes as of about 6 months ago when I got mine. If you're just referring to the Yoko website for availabilty info a call to a dealer may end in heartbreak.
A539's have been replaced by Yoko C-Drive which are also available in that size, similar price, similar targeting, designed to the the A539 replacement.
Maybe try some Yoko/Advan A032Rs or similar if you really expect

Thanks for the replies.
Just came back from a few tyre joints in my lunch break.
Yeah, it seemes the A539 is discontinued as of 2002!
Has anyone tried the new Yokohama C-Drive tyres?
The chump at the tyre joint reckons they are slightly better than the Potenza GIIIs. They don't cost too much more either.
Suprisingly, they are also a non-directional tyre.
I'll probably stick to Performance street tyres, not semi slicks. I have been running some Toyo semi slicks for a few months. They are very good. But I'd prefer the safety of having a wet/dry tyre that doesn't wear as quickly as a club tyre.
G-Grids eh?
I've had them on the back of my 86 in 13" form once. I don't know if the rubber was old or what, but I thought they were terrible. Who knows... maybe i'll give them a second chance.
BTW, just got quoted $132ea for Potenza GIII in 14" form
and $135ea for Yokohama C-Drive 14".
How does this pricing compare to what else is out there?

Hey garth.
What tyre is that pricing for?
You mention G3s. Did you mean Grid3s? Or potenza GIIIs?

Michelin XM1s right?
I might get a pair of those for the rear and something like G3s for the front.

Do the XM1's come in 55 series?
I have a pair of A539 185/55's fitted at the moment, and yes I am happy with them but they discontinued them
They wear pretty quick though, so Ill be in the market for some new treads soon and am looking for a similar thing to Jesse, but really dont want to use 60 series profile.

Nah, only 60 and up unfortunately. They aren't really marketed as a performance tyre, but for some reason I (and Jesse) found them to be almost freakishly grippy.

Freaky indeed.
On another note, I've heard mixed opinions on the C-Drive tyre. I dont think I will go with them.
I have decided I'll get Potenza G3 185/60R14 (on 14x7) for the front.
And Michelin XM1 185/60R14 (on 14x6) for the rear.
Anyone got any final words? or forever hold your peace.

hihi
im yet to try the c-drives, but my solid sources say that it is very similar to the A539 to drive on, with the same compound, and reinforced sidewalls.
i was thinking about trying some, but i run yoko ES100s and im yet to find something better
i havent tried the michelin xm1s, how much for a 195/50/15?
ps. i only ever buy new tyres for the front, just the other day i got some falken azenis in 185/60/14 on my ma61 wheels for the back. they arent bad, not super grip tho.
Edit: i think that potenza G3s are one of the best value tyres on the market. for the price, the grip is great. wet weather performance is great too, better than an A539

i have tried pretty much every 14 inch tyre all in 185/60 or 55..
lately i have been using re71 185/55/14 on the front they rock..but i cant get them no more
i like g grids, but i am going to try NEXEN v2000 185/55/14 on the front on a 7, and 175/60/14 on the rear on a 7, the nexens are pretty cheap too about $100-115 ea

lawson do Nexen make tyres in that size? On my old 17s and 16s I used Nexen tyres, and was very happy with them. Handled well, wore slowly and very cheap.

Ive got Goodyear Eagle F1's on the front of mine and they do everything a tyr should do. never ever ever have experienced understeer in either dry or wet pouring conditions at G1 or port gawler.
priced at $130 a tyre for 195/50/15 they are AWESOME, have used G3;s and FM901's on the front and neither of these come close.
not sure if they come in 185/60/14's jesse but if they do get them,!!

Simmo, how do u compare es100 with eagle f1s?
ill try the F1s next, at $130 a tyre if they are as great as you say they are, would make them one of the best value performance tyres around.
ive got sooooo much front end grip right now, went up to loby the other night, pushing the front into corners where previously it would just under it just TURNS. corners that i came into too hot, just push the wheel harder and it TURNS. so much track im lovin it

yir, go teh ES100s ey arch
i havent tried too many tyres as i seem to be stuck in my ways (yokohama > anything else ) but i have heard very good things about the potenza G3s. i have used them but they were second hand and i only used em for a drift prac day so i dint get a chance to test their grip too much.
i would say dont bother with the Cdrives, they are passenger tyres, not really performance tyres. you could do worse, but if you really want good performance, Cdrives arent cool.
i'd say ES100s but im hugely biased, i love yokies

I also run G-Grids on the front 185/60/14 on 8'' wide rims.
Im happy with them especially for the price. Might have to give the Potenza G3's a go next time. Sound like everyone is happy with them. The NEXENS I had on the back of my 180sx in 17'' were not a bad tire at all for the price.
As for KUMHO, I would rather drive on space saver spares. They are TERRIBLE.......

cheers simmo, id love to give em a go yeh
andrew, i hear ya man, once u get good yokies its hard to go to anything else hey!
yesterday afternoon i went for a quick gorge run just because i was in teh area. Going uphill in the high speed section, top of third gear at over 100km/h it has such predictable oversteer. not gonna say i held corners or anything like that, but i was going through with zero counter and it was heaps predictable.
im sure its due to having much better rear susp than i did before, its great
