Hey there guys.. I'm new, my name is Matt and i have a 1985 Toyota Corolla hatch. it's a 1300 automatic with a 2inch sports exhaust system.
I am really interested in suping it up some more, only i don't know what to do first... i am in the midst of putting some racing plugs in and thinking about a high performance air filter... i just want to know if anyone can help me...
Cheers anyways

"racing plugs" will do absolutely nothing for you except lighten your wallet.
high performance air filter? it's not the filter, but the filter housing that is restrictive.
wait.. you mean it's 3A AE82?

well.. i think the first step is for you to go to your car, look at the identification plate in the engine bay, and see what model of corolla it is (ie, body code) and then see what the engine code is..
it will remarkably widen your ability to have questions answered. ..
good luck!

If you have a Corolla with a 1.3 litre engine and an auto, I don't recommend wasting your time trying to "soup it up". Any modifications you perform will transform it from unbelievably slow to slightly-less-unbelievably slow. Even with a high performance air filter and "racing plugs" (lol) you will still get beaten by a bog-stock 1995 Hyundai Excel. Seriously, it will wipe the floor with you.
Having said that, it's your car - so good luck.

it might all seem a bit over the top and over whelming, but no one here was born with car knowledge, the majority of us have either studied or just have an interest in tinkering with their beast. We all also have years of rusted bolts, rounded nuts and snapped plastic surrounds that we would not soon share with others
while its true you probably wont see too much gain from that motor its a good stepping stone to learning about cars in general.
I recommend you perform as much maintenance on the car as you can, buy a manual and go through it step by step. youll be surprised how much you can learn by just doing it yourself.
once you feel confident stripping parts down, replacing gaskets and basic tuning (timing, dwell if applicable etc.) you can move on to a slightly faster car that will yield better results from 'souping' hehe

cheers again... it is a bit overwhelming i must admit... especially when people are talking about 4AFE, 4AGEness and other things.... and whats with the AE80 talk?? i thought the body number had nothing to do with the workings of the car

this is a forum where people do mostly engine conversions.
they want to establish your chassis code so they can determine exactly what you have in there, and what will bolt up in its place without too much fuss.
with regards to 4AGE etc there is a document on this forum that explains them...
http://toymods.org.au/engine_codes.html
and for chassis codes:
http://toymods.org.au/model_codes.html
double check what your car is and compare them with the list.
I wouldnt worry about figuring out which engine you can transplant as i dont think you are ready for all the pain and suffering that goes along with it hehe...
learn with ur car, then move on

the body number does have a little to do with the workings of the car. The ae80's came out with 2ac, whereas ae82 came out with 4ac's and later 4age ![Very Happy](images/smiley_icons/icon_biggrin.gif)
Dont worry, you'll get there one day When i joined the club just over 2 years ago i knew jack shit about my car, but now it's somewhat better

Just to answer your question
The 2AC Series engines are a family of straight-4 internal combustion engines with displacement from 1.3 L with cast iron engine block and cylinder heads.
Cylinder bore was 76 mm (2.99 in) and stroke was 71.4 mm (2.81 in). It was a 2-valve SOHC design.
Power output ranged from just 62 hp (46 kW) at 4800 rpm all the way to 90 hp (67 kW) at 6000 rpm. Torque was less spread from 75 ft·lbf (101 N·m) at 2800 rpm to 89 ft·lbf (120 N·m) at 4000 rpm.

2A is the engine block number, just like 4A, 3S etc etc
the 2A's have 8 valve SOHC 1.3L displacement and the rest in Ray's post ![Very Happy](images/smiley_icons/icon_biggrin.gif)
Later you'll see that that's very weak compared to some of the 4A's which are 16valve, DOHC, 1.6L and put out more than double the power with no mods

I used to be in the same boat as you. Knew very little about cars, motors, and had no idea what all the numers and letters and all that mumbo jumbo they all seemed to speak on these forums was. Now most of these guys know alot more than i do but atleast now i can understand what they are on about. I highly recomend you go to the search function, put in "ae80" and see what comes up in the tech and conversations forums. Read as much about your car as possible. also go here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Toyota_engine s
it is super useful, find out about your engine, the other engines they speak of, what might fit into your car etc... http://www.toymods.org.au/swap_guide.html
definitly learn about your car first. Read lots of stuff on here, and if they start talking about things you dont know, (diff, alternator etc...*i know i had no idea what they were till i looked them up*) go look them up at
http://www.howstuffworks.com/
All i can say is learn as much as you can before throwing your hard earned pennies away. also use your resources, this forum is an awesome resource, post questions if your not sure about something. But remember to use the search function to find it first
good luck
