Bloody Tie Rod End!!! Mon, 20 January 2003 03:30 Go to next message
Guys,

How the hell do I get the tie rod end off my mx83 Cressida with out damaging the CV in the steering arm?
I have tried brute strenght but I am affraid of popping(damaging) the cv.
I stuffed the thread whilst removing it with a large hammer, so I need to have the thread repaired.
Any help is welcome.

Thanks.

You actually need 2 large hammers. Rather than hitting on the end of the thread, which will only bugger things up, you need to hold one hammer against the side, and hit the other side, to expand and 'break' the taper. With a bit of practice you'll laugh at how easy it really is. And if you damaged the old one, replace it - they're not that expensive, and lot cheaper than a new head!

The prongs unfortunately have the habit of rupturing the rubber seal, but they are readily and cheaply available from a good auto parts store.
If you have butchered the thread, just get a new one. They aren't THAT expensive anyway.

Thanks for the reply guys.
I did butcher the thread getting it out. I'll put that one down to experience or lack of.
Now that its out I want to detach the end form the rest of the rod that goes into the steering rack(cv). The tread on that(where you can make adjustments when wheel aligning) will not move so I cant get the end off. If I twist too hard I fear it will damage the CV??
Sorry for the dodgy explanation but Im not too mechancially educated???? Im a desk jocky, and I hate it.

Ah, yes, the adjuster. I must admit, I usually loosen this off first because they invariably are rusted in place. With both tie rod ends still attached, I undo the 2 securing nuts at each end of the collar, and soak for 24 hours with WD40. If you are lucky there may be a small gap into the centre of the collar. I gently pry this open with a screwdriver and deposit more WD40. After 1 day, I get the biggest plumber's wrench I can find and put my whole weight on it. Usually it budges.
With one tie rod end off, it will be a bit harder. You could put the tie rod end back in and do as above, or take off the other one and undo the lot in a vice.
When you put it back together, smear a tiny amount of grease in the threads so it's a bit easier next time.

PS. I am a weakling, so you might find it easy. Also don't work under a car without jackstands.

I had to get mine off on the XX. They don't tell you about the 20+ years of road grit in the manual that requires you to improvise Evil or Very Mad
Got it off though, just needs a bit of brute force Razz

2 really big hammers each side of the collar on the steering horn get one person to hold one and you belt the collar really hard the theory is that the shock wave that passes through the horn to the other hammer loosens the tepered bit on the balljoint.
Using this method i usually have a great amount of success. Rolling Eyes

Thanks for your help guys. I eventually got all 4 off, 2 off cressi, 2 off chaser. Things went pretty well once I realised there was a lock nut(thanks tomato!).
I told you I was mechanically retarded!!!!
