Painting is the most common method of stopping the pipes from corrosion. I have used engine enamel, due to the fact that its pretty tough paint & wont scratch easy, but its not essential. any paint will do really, as the pipes are not subjected to huge amounts of heat unless they come particularly close to the exhaust manifold. Give the pipes a good once over with some fine grade sandpaper, then wash them & wipe with acetone or thinners before painting. You'll get a pretty neat finish this way.
Ceramic coating is obviously more durable again, and has pretty favourable heat resistant properties, but at a cost.
Cheers

Personally i'd go the ceramic coating from Competition Coatings in Guilford.
I used to have my pipes painted but they look like crap after a while unless you have 2 pak spray booth. I had 3 feet of my piping (2.5inch mild steel) done for around $90.
Added bonus of the heat properties and it polishes up well. Talk to Rob there and get a quote over the phone. Have your diameter and length of pipes ready.

You could try hammertone paint for a different look, it's very hard and durable. In Pendle Hill there is a guy who restores antique bathtubs and he also enamels exhaust manifolds etc. Very fine finish, only in black though due to the heat resistant additive.

Maybe powder coat? It would probably be a lot cheaper.
