3sge timing belt tensioner question Mon, 12 December 2005 07:12 Go to next message
Hi all

I've just noticed that my cams are out of tune, the intake cam is 1 tooth clockwise to advance, and the exhaust cam is half a tooth anti-clockwise

I'm reseting it all to the stock settings, but I'm not sure how to loosen the cam tensioner on this motor..

its a 3rd gen 3sge

When you pull the front timing belt covers off, the tensionor is held by a large spring, pull the spring off, reset the belt, put tension on the tensioner, rotate the crank 720 degrees, if the timing is still smack on, put the spring back on, and happy camping.

take top timing cover off and there will be 2 x12mm bolts take these out take tensioner out put it in a vice and slowly compress and put in hole on the tensioner a 1.2mm hex key and undo then rebolt after you have the cams in proper set up then pull out hex key with pliers

i dunno what richard was talking about but, yeah you need to unbolt the tensioner, and compress it with a vice grip, or if you don't have one you can use a G clamp but the "piston" will rotate and make it alot harder to put the hex key thru it
