My brothers corollas clutch master cylinder died the other night. We have replaced the master and the clutch works fine but we cannot get it out of 1st gear.

Check that:

The clutch isn't actually 'grown' onto the flywheel, and not disengaging

Wear in the gearshift cable eyes

Yeah the clutch works fine, after thinking about it for a bit i've come to the conclusion he has snapped the 1st - 2nd shift fork.

Symtoms:
Clutch works fine.
Still in first gear.
Can move shifter through the gate and we still get the indent clicks from the balls on the shift rod thingy.

So looks like another gearbox for this one.

check that the linkages havent been jamed or damaged while the repair was done. Because clutch working or not the car can be taken out of first when stationary, there are exceptions though Razz
