Happy Story: Not all workshops are bastards Wed, 22 January 2003 04:41 Go to next message
Well after my pathetic 135KW @ all 4 paws and big surging problems with my turbo, I today rang the place that built my turbo and they are willing to fix it under warranty. Surprised Surprised

They were thinking to get me a second hand one and rebuild it smaller but i dont want to go down in power so weve discussed going bigger. They said they dont mind if they have to do it 2 or 3 times to get it right but so long as i realize that i may have to take the turbo off the car that 2-3 times. This is going to be at their expense. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Not all workshops are Bastards.

Just hope they keep to their word...otherwise it'll be a different story.

But yeh, good on you for finding what seems to be a decent workshop.

Precision Turbochargers came very highly recommended. And they seem like more than genuine people to deal with.

I'll be up for a hunting trip Smile

Gary, good news on the turbo rebuild! I'll have to use them when I'm looking into getting some forced induction.

GEE120: Can you tell me more about the compressor surge problem?? I'm interested to know as we have been having trouble with a mate's setup with surge, you can hear the reversion noise really loudly, and power drops off markedly. You can even see the boost fluctuate a few psi up & down on the guage. His turbo consisted of a 13B turbo core & turbine wheel/shaft, Nissan VG30 exhaust housing machined to suit, & Garrett TO4B 'V' trim compressor wheel. The turbo builder took it back & machined a step in the compressor housing to alter the flow to the wheel, which didnt work, then went for a larger compressor housing, still surging, then finally a significantly smaller compressor wheel, still surging.

Now there's a factory RB25 turbo bolted to it, and the problem will not occur. The turbo builder is stumped by this, as he was sure the smaller comp wheel would fix it.

Good luck with yours! Hope its a more simple case!

CHeers
Phil

TE72_Turbo,

My symptoms are much the same although my boost drop is about 7psi and 5 psi of surge up and down. The problem occured only after getting my 3" exhaust which really unrestricted the airflow. (this is with pod filter on)

Its not as severe as above with the stock airbox.

GEE120 and TE72_Turbo interested to know at what pressure and RPM are you having your surge problem, I had a problem with a TO-3 on a 2LT at high revs, turned out to be the comp wheel was spinning too fast to make pressure (cavitating). Changed the comp wheel to TO-4 and the problem was gone?

Ok here is trying. I really need a big favour from someone if they are in a position to help me out.

I need to send my CT20B back to have it rebuilt (warranty) and it may need to come on and off the car a couple
of times before i get it back with a balanced combination that doesn't surge.

What I'm hoping is that someone has one lying around that they are not using and would be willing to
lend it to me for a couple of weeks. Cause i need my car to get to work and back cause public transport to
work would take me 3 1/2 hours plus each way.

Normally i would just go out and buy a second hand one but with the minus $450 commission i had this month
out of my monthly pay. I am very very strapped for cash. If someone has one in working order for sale even for like
$100 i might be able to scrape the in.

I know its a big ask but I'm very broke and cant afford to take time off work to do it.
Your help is much appreciated.

Maybe you should use a real boost guage and not a Fridge pressure guage. Laughing Laughing

it's actually a johnson controls guage, it's meant to be used on a pneumatic control system, so i dont doubt it' accuracy, but it doesn't show negative pressure.
