Are all DVD's widescreen? Sat, 08 June 2002 06:12 Go to next message
Just a quick one guys, I just bought a PS2 for GT3 and watching DVD's. Are all DVD's widescreen? I have 70cm tv and the black lines at the top and bottom are giving me the shits. My wife just bought 4 new DVD's and yep there all bloody widescreen. Whats the go with this? I've tried changing the picture settings with the PS2, but still no luck. My brother has an $800 DVD player and he said his machine has a special function which can re-adjust the picture to get rid of 95% of those bullshit black lines. I dunno I think he might be pulling my leg.

Im used to widescreen, without it you just realise how much of the picture you are loosing, u can adjust the screen settings for the PS2 ( but it looks dodgy) , stop the dvd ( black screen ) get the menu up, goto setup and display, should be some options to change, then just press play

but its not the same.....

u could just go out and buy a widescreen TV =P

Some are, some arent - depends on the DVD. Have a look at the back and it will tell you what ratio the DVD is, but I definately have some that arent widescreen.

Most DVD's will have the "Black Bars" at the top and bottem! This does'nt mean that they are widescreen! When you get a widescreen DVD, the "Bars" will be much bigger!

I have about 40 and the're all widescreen except 2. they are two sided and has widescreen on one side and normal aspect on the other.

Most dvd's and tv's now have a stretch function which will stretch the image to get rid of the bars...but it looks like shit. All their heads are elongated.

I hate widescreen as well. I wish all dvd's had the two sided thing like lock, stock does. I guess we'll have to wait until we can afforg digital tv's...

Tim.

Some of the newer DVD players have a opinion of what display, like Full Screen, Widescreen and different Ratios. Not sure about PS2 about.

Do you like ur PS2?

guys most of the movies you see at the cinema are shown in a 'widescreen' format.

with digital television here widescreen tvs are the way of the future.

a film-maker shoots a film in a certain way... to alter it by stretching or cutting off footage is inexcusable.

films should be viewed as their makers intended you to see them.

chances are the countless movies you may have seen in 'normal' format are actually incomplete.

being in the industry i have to admit i am biased but i do get disheartened to see the lack of respect given to film as a craft.

my rant for the day

There is a reason for the letterbox format, and that it is because our brain and eyes can register it more clearly. It may shit you because you are used to the old style.

Try watching them on a TV with a proper aspect ratio. You can make it fill the screen and it doesn't go stuffed, its absolutely awesome. Mind you, for the moment, normal TV looks a little stuffed Smile
