7MGTE oil leak Thu, 23 January 2003 08:21 Go to next message
hey guys,
i've been losing some oil recently and it seems to be coming from the gap between the exhaust manifold heat insulator and the manifold itself, just near the bolt, around the first cylinder, its only small deposits but they seem to occur consistently evertime i run the car. Does anyone know what could be causing this and if its serious or not? I also noticed a small amount of oil in the turbo in the air intake near the impeller wheel, could this be related?
thanks for the help

Thats right near your cam position sensor, so you could renew the o-ring on that and see if it helps. The cam cover gaskets on the 7m are prone to leaking and you may need to tighten them.

thanks for that
didn't know there would be oil involved in CPS, thought it was all electrical but now i think about it i guess it would
took the manifold insulator part of the way off to check and the exhaust manifold was clean so it isn't coming from anywhere there.
would cam cover gaskets be a pain to get at?
cheers

The CPS is driven from the exhaust cam, and has an O-ring sealing where it enters the head. Pretty easy to renew the O-ring, from memory you just pull off the top turbo coolant line and unbolt the power steering res. bracket. Make sure you are TDC on the compression stroke before you pull the CPS though.
The philips headed screws holding the cam covers down may need a bit of work to get to. If you haven't taken the top off your engine yet it may be a little intimidating, but you are going to have to do it some time (when you blow your head gasket). Might be an idea to retorque your headbolts while your're at it. Plenty of info on the net about how to do this, come to think of it the TSRM (Toyota service and repair manual) is online, just don't use toyotas headbolt torque spec....
If you have any questions feel free to email me

yeah, i have the manuals, was looking through them last night, the CPS makes a lot more sense now, i'll have a fiddle with it when i get home tonight, it is a little intimidating and the head was re-torqued before i bought it so i wasn't planning on having to do it anytime soon

just out of interest anyone know the difference between how CPS works and how a distributor works?

A CPS send the ECU a signal which allows it to determing where the engine it in its rotational cycle, and by referencing with a clock speed, how fast it is turning. The ECU the send an ignition siqnal to the ignitor pack, which amplifys the signal and send it to the coil pack. Coil pack transforms this to extremely high voltage and sparks the plugs.
In the case of an electronic distributor, the distributor sends a signal to the ecu, ecu fires a coil, and the high tension spark signals are distributed by the rotor turning under the cap of the distributor, to each of the spark plugs.
