18R-C Inlet Upgrade Mon, 27 January 2003 05:16 Go to next message
Any one know a cheap and easy way to upgrade the inlet on an 18R-C, it's so bloody restrictive, I was thinking if nothing else to just trying to jack the carbie up a bit on a spacer block, to perhaps give it a bit extra torque.

Is there easily bolted on carbie/manifolds that will have better flow??

Thanks

Alan.

You could start with a new engine. Very Happy
I know what you mean about the inlet manifold though. Other than making a custom manifold i dont know how you could fix the problem I mean lets face it the volume metric effeciency of the engine isnt really high so you might just have to put up with it. If youve got a standard carby you could just oversize the primary jet on size i did this and it had a noticable difference.

Well, I was trying to get my hands on an 18r-g, but unfortunatly, the 18r-c had a bit of a failure and had to spen cash on it just to keep the thing running, so it'll have to wait till another day I guess.

Thanks anyway

Al

You could try and get a 18R inlet manifold.
Nicer than the 18RC... doesnt have the emissions stuff connected to it everywhere. Very simple.

That it does Sad
I wonder how difficult it is to weld...
Grind/cut out the bend and weld in a bigger turn area box.

BTW... the heat box, where the inlet and exst manifolds bolt together.
How do they join... i mean, are the mating sufaces flat, or somthing else like a passage for exst gas to move into a chamber in the inlet mainfold?

Get a weber, ring up pick'n payless in Sydney and see if they have an inlet manifold and double throat 45mm side draft webers. they should have them if they haven't already sold them.

how do i know?

they were off my car and my car is out there Sad

they have a flat mating surface with a heat chamber inside, I belive this chamber has to do with the auto choke, theres a tube that runs down from the choke into and out of this chamber and then into the manifold I think. So the chamber heats up and I guess in turn heats the air in the tube and alters the amount of presure in the tube and changes the choke position. However if you have extractors as in my car this tube simply hangs below the manifold doing nothing.

Thanks... my carb is manual choke so the three tube connections down there (incl PCV inlet) are blocked up.

Im just wondering how much of an effect it would have if i separated the exst manifold from the inlet manifold. It would keep the inlet manifold cooler, but im wondering how this would effect fuel atomization as thats partly what the heatbox is there to help with.

The exh manifold has a dirty great hole there so the gases can get right up under the intake manifold. To seperate the manifolds you would have to seal up the exh which would rerquire grinding sufficient material off the manifold to fit a plate in.
That sounds like a lok of work to me the other option for you is to get a set of extractors which would improve your performance anyhows.

Ahh right, thanks.
Thats what i was wondering... if there was a passage between the two manifolds.

I was lined up to get extractors, but that fell through Sad

I wonder if extractors would really be worth the effort anyway.

i USE TO HAVE EXTRACTORS ON MINE AND THEY DID MAKE A NOTICABLE DIFFERENCE TO THE STANDARD MANIFOLD

yeah, extracters do help, and it's a pritty easy mod, mine are pritty crap extracters but there still better than the standard manifold.

Hmmm... might have to look into finding some then.
Thanks.
