I've just discovered that the lobe on the inlet camshaft for the number 1 cylinder is worn away - half gone. Can these cams be built up and reground? Any advice is welcome

They can, but make sure a good hardener is used or it will happen again. Alternatively, get some aftermarket cams for it.
