RA65 and MA61 x memember and chassis similarities?? Tue, 28 January 2003 12:35 Go to next message
i noticed in the controvertial RA6X conversion thread that someone said that a 5 M bolted strait up to the RA6x cross member/mounts, something along the lines of...its just like a 5 m just two cylinders shorter.
it strikes me then tthat if the chassis of the two cars are so similar, a better result could be achieved with a 1J conversion in an RA65 than an MA61, due to the fact that there is less in the front end of a celica and they weigh less overall. perhaps this would handle better with properly setup suspension than a 1J ma61. (i am aware that two extra cylinders adds some weight to the MA61) if the 5M does bolt strait up to the RA x member then that means my mounts (JZ to MA61) will bolt strait up to the ra xmember. and i should have the same amount of room either side of the engine just less up front. and if anyone wonders, wouldn't a JZ be to long i will point out that we have 1 G sprinters in the club Smile
does anyone have any ideas or feedback or even info on chassis similarities of the two ?
much appreciated. Smile

A few points:

- The RA6x and MA6x chassis are not the same. The Supra is several inches longer in wheelbase, and the chassis rails are totally different forward of the doors.
- The RA6x engine bay is much smaller. A JZ or M series engine will fit, but not without a lot of screwing around (eg relocating radiator).
- I'd be surprised if an M series engine bolted up to an R series crossmember, but maybe it does!
- Handling would be crap with so much weight forward of the front wheels. Toyota made the Supra's wheelbase longer for a reason you know.
- The main reason the RA6x is lighter is because of the lighter engine. Put a big six in the engine bay, along with the drivetrain to match, and most of the weight advantage will disappear.

In summary, it's simply not worth the effort to put a big six in a Celica, especially when it's so much easier and more effective to start with a Supra in the first place.

there is three people i know of building a supra coupe as we speak as soon as i find another ra65 i will be another one, but this is purely just a fun car, the 22re will most likely be swapped into the supra front end until a suitable replacement can be found like a 2jz (now im dreaming, another engine project ??) as this will be a daily driver for a while

when i get pics ill post them ASAP

cheers
wayne

p.s. i will be utilising some sort of different tailights, any ideas ?...i was thinking the late 80's round style sklyine lights and a 5 inch tall spoiler that looks like a "E" on its side...though im sure everyone is about to jump in and abuse me again, each to their own you damn ricers! Twisted Evil

Ricers? Isn't rice doing something to change the appearance of the car without actually doing anything for its performance? What performance advantage is grafting a coupe rear going to have on the car?

Err... If you were going to graft the Supra front end on, wouldn't it be easier to use the 5M-E instead of having to convert it to take the 22R-E?

No, its going to involve grafting a coupe rear onto a MA61...then fit the 22RE.

dont be upset frank just cos you are going to be the first ever to go the 1ggte option Confused

i would use the 22re because it is cheap on fuel and there is mildy worked one sitting here in the garage this is not going to be a car meant to go super fast, it will have hardened suspension but that is just about it

in a perfect world when i finish all my other projects i would drop a 1uz in there and leave that as a stock auto, just another custom cruiser
