Hey Guys,
Whats a reasonable price to get a 4AC head swapped over, and what sort of gaskets would I need?
I was just quoted a price of ~$300ish for a head change over, thats a bit harsh aint it?

Seeing as i just picked up a 4A-C, running, no smoke, good condition, for $50, including an Exeddy clutch plate, its almost not worth getting a head done on a 4A-C.
Having said that, it does depend on whats been done to the head. Just a clean and check? has it been decked? ported? Has it been converted for unleaded use? etc. Are you doing this yourself, or paying to get it done? Find out the details before making a decision, this may well tell you if it's a good price or not.
EvilJack: if its a fully reco head, with new valves etc, yes, it could go to that depending on the engine you are talking about. A reco 4A-C was quoted to me at $1300. For $1600 you can a GZE import!
Head gaskets start at about $40 from a Gas Miser, but for reliability, you want one around the $60 to $70 mark. Manifold gasket (just one cause its not a x-flow head) are under $20 The rocker cover gasket should be reuasable, other wise there $15 aprox.
Don't for get the labour for swapping over vales or needing new ones for the new head. Either way it will cost you to get it done, or you may need special tools to do it yourself if you dont already have them.
Just out of curiosity, whats wrong with the old head that made you need to get a new one?
So with out more details, yes, $300 could well be the right price.
Craig.

Well being stubborn as I always am ;p I decided that I would rather keep my $300 and spend my days off doing the head swap myself
10~ Hours work and some mashed fingers and I got the job done! Ive never done one before so there was a bit of a learning curve!
The only problems I encountered was:
* Setting the timing, had to learn that too...
* Putting the damn spark plug leads on in the wrong order ;p
* Loosing one bolt after everything was working! And it was from the damn bonnet hinge of all things!
And in the end all it cost was $90 for gasket set, $35 for an oil filter and 6lt of oil and $30 for a 2nd hand head that had been smoothed on the bottom!
Damn thing runs better than ever now! Nice and tail happy on gravel roads again...
