Lagging 3S-GTE?

I dont know if this is what you would call lagging but anyway 
I seem to have my 3S running reasonably ok now but when I open the throttle quickly it seems to die but then pickup and rev very nicely!
At the moment there is no air box or filter fitted so could this be causing the problem? I have tried putting my hand over the turbo inlet a little and it seems to cure the problem a tad?(maybe my imagination?).
But does anyone have any ideas? Anything I could try?
