Fiberglass to steel body panels
Fri, 31 January 2003 02:49
The rear wheel arches on my 73 Celica are severely rusted out. A friend of mine has a pair of fiberglass replacement panels for the lower half of the fenders. How do you attach the fiberglass lower panels to the steel fenders without leaving a seam? After the panels are attached, will the fiberglass and steel crack or seperate from different rates of expansion and contraction?
I have done some body work but I have nevr tried this before. Any help would be much appreciated.
you should be able to fiberglass (resin and a bit of matt for strength) the panel straight on to the metal one, i would use some pop rivets as well.
depending how thick the fibergalss panel is, they can be countersunk and bogged(body filler) over....
use body filler to hide the seams...
i have only ever seen fiberglass and metal panels crack at the seams when there is a lot of flex(movement)on the repaired panel, but being a front fender it should be ok...
