Following on from the "Turbo in a bottle" thread, I did some research and found the electric turbocharger I mentioned (it's manufactured by TurboDyne). You can see it here:
http://www.turbodyne.com/product2.html

It's actually quite clever! The electric motor sits on the shaft between the turbine and the impeller, and it is able to keep the turbo on boost when there isn't enough exhaust gas flowing to maintain sufficient shaft speed. Once the turbo is able to spool up of its own accord, the motor becomes a generator which replaces the power drained from the battery (and it appears this thing can drain a significant amount of power). They claim this eliminates the need for a wastegate in some cases.

ver very intresting, seems like a great idea but i like turbo lag at times... when u trying to save money dont wanna guzzle all the fuel by hitting boost, but one thing that i cant understand is "Improve Specific Fuel Consumption" how would u improve u would make it worse not better, turbo no lag = more petrol.
Does someone out there have a theroy that will prove me wrong, if so i might try to get my hands on one off these suckers.

The unit is electronically controlled, and I expect it needs to be integrated into the engine management somehow so it knows when you want maximum power and when you're just cruising.

It could well improve specific fuel consumption, but may not improve fuel consumption. Specific fuel consumption is the amount of fuel used for a given output, not the amount of fuel the car itself uses overall.
