In NSW it is based on the engine in the car, not the car itself. So my RA28 had to have a cat fitted when I put the 3T-GTE in. This is just what the engineer told me though, so maybe there is some loop hole where you don't have to run it.
I remember someone with an early 70s car who didn't have to fit a cat due to the age of the car??? not sure...
But my 77 had to have one.

i think it has more to do with the fuel that the engine uses now or used from factory
leaded no cat unleaded need a cat cause of the benzine (i think its benzine) is dangerous a carcinogen

I found out today that even in the ACT now you have to have a cat, and an unleaded filler neck if the motor in your car came from the factory as unleaded, regardless of the age of the car you put it in.

Last i heard is if the car was made before June 1976 it doesnt require the cat or unleaded filler neck as it didnt have a certain ADR that post June 1976 cars have. I dont have a cat on my car or unleaded filler neck but i also haven't engineered it yet!!! Best thing to do is make a cat that you can unbolt and bolt a peice of straight pipe in its place for racing etc, or leave the pipe in until you get defected or have to go for a pink slip. Thats what i will be doing if the engineer tells me i need one.

I have herad that there are big fines for not running a cat (if required to). I think i will speak to the rta or an engineer tommorow and check this out.

Jamie spoke to a friend who has a car pre '76 and this ADR and his engineer made him fit cat and filler neck because engine was unleaded, this may vary form engineer to engineer, but sounds fair to me.

BUT don't want until you get a defect for having no cat if your car requires it because the EPA can fine you on the spot, no questions asked $1000 - $5000.

Hi fella's, the engineer looked at my car yesterday and he said i dont need to put a cat or an unleaded filler neck on!!! He said that their was a 3TGTE which came out as a leaded (apparently the first one) and as their is no way to tell them apart he said i just have to say i run it on leaded and its ok as is. I will fit a cat later on but at least this way i can get it engineered now and buy a cat later .(i know its not the right thing but i have better things to spend $400 on at the moment.) He also is engineering 17's on my car, gauges on the pillar ,front mount intercooler ,aftermarket ECU,3in exhaust, as well as it being lowered 4in. The only thing he wasnt keen on was the tint! Also i only have to get an emission test done at idle and have less than 4.5% CO. The cost of the certificate is $330 incl GST!!!

If in NSW this engine must be run with a cat. The rules changed 2 and a bit years ago. I was unable to engineer my 73 model Corolla without one. Pointless asking the question here. Run all of your questions by the consulting engineer that you plan to check the car and then have him do it. At the end of the day it is his interpretation of the rules that matters, no-one elses.
