Hydraulic suspension supplier & legality Sun, 02 February 2003 14:29 Go to next message
Does anyone know where I could try to source electronic height adjustable hydraulic suspension for a Soarer (if it even exists) ?

Also, I've heard that these are illegal in NSW. Is there any truth to this, or is someone talking crap ?

You could try and Find a wrecked Active Soarer and swap all the suspension and steering over, but I don't think it would be that simple.

Hydraulic Suspension would have to weigh a tonne anyway, I wouldn't bother personally.

Nah, wasn't interesed in UZZ32 gear. You're prolly right with the weight factor, certainly something a Soarer doesn't need.

If you end up changing your setup I might be interested in your old gear.

Yes, my car is lowered (a lot). Whoever had the car in Japan went a little too far (about 1cm) for my liking. My main problem is the front rubber lip scrapes on just about everything (driveways, speedhumps (sometimes) and those concrete blocks that "warn" you not to go any further in car parks.

I was toying with the idea of hydaulics so I could still keep the height of the car (or should that read "lowness" ?) the same, but prop the car up for speedhumps, parking, and driveways.

My current setup is a full set of Potenza brand coil-overs. Rear ones have adjustable damper and maybe the front (haven't pulled off the rubber covers on the strut tops yet). The car looks way better than standard (and a bit bumpy) but at least I didn't have to fork out for them myself.

You list yourself as south of Sydney... maybe we can meet up for a drive one day ? I'd like to see your Soarer Smile

Damn... the kit looks awesome, but AUS$6000 is a little bit (well, a lot) out of my reach.
Thanks for the info anyway Manny.

You could just fit a set of slightly higher springs, I'm sure King springs could whack you up a set for a lot less than $6000, Though the soarer is hard enough to get over things on standard springs. (I like my charade as I don't have to slow down on gutters, humps or for those concrete stoppers in carparks)

Hydraulic and airbag suspension is a pain in the arse as it gets older and starts leaking, most people who own older BMW's, Lincolns, Cadillacs etc take it out and replace with standard systems rather than repair.

That kit looks a bit dodgy to me....

Have a look at the Gif file of the van type thing changing heights and check out how much the camber changes in it!!

Not to mention you'll loose more of our oh so precioius little boot space.

dunno about nsw, but in the A.C.T i'm 90% sure Airbag suspension is legal (just slow height adjusting). However i'm also 90% sure that full-lowrider hydraulics (I.E ZOOOT CRRRR ZOOOOT CRRRR "hey look at that bird!" ) is illegal in all states of Australia, although there are quite a few getting around still Smile . As said before, many manufacturers bring it out from factory, including your model, so it should be legal i'd say, most likely will need engineers though. The guy in the next street from me has a Lowrider '67 Impala imported from America, what more need i say? Make sure you hold onto your hat! hehe it's so much fun hehehe

Toyrota,, is that 67 like a light blue colored one?
I thought of imported a lowrider, till i found how much it'll cost.. so ,, umm I couldn't afford to run a huge V8, nor to buy one (maybe soon) so instead i've juiced my celica..
SOrt of an experiment as I can put the hydraulics into a larger car or minitruck later on.
I got pics up at:
http://www.geocities.com/unitylowridercc
goto members rides and click on "Scott - 83 Celica"
I got some AVI's up there but they're about 4MB each, anyone have the resources to convert these AVI's to MPEG? would be much appreciated.
I thought some V8 soarer's have the air adjustable suspensioN? it has a small compressor in the engine bay. You could use that as it gives a decent change in height. Or got air bag suspension but you wont get the shock absorbing you need.. Ppl think hydro's or air bag suspension is replacing your shox,, it duzn't, it just acts as an adjustable spring...
To stay on the road you need to run additional shox, if you wanna bounce then take off da shox. Will be at Cleveland Car show in QLD this Sunday (9th Feb 2003) if anyone wants to have a look and if it's not raining.
btw,, legality is still an issue, can be enginneer'd if you run shox and a slow system (12volt) most air bag systems are no worries, but hydros usually need additional shocks and or accumulators like citreons. And yes hydro's are super handy when going over things..
Got some side skirts but they're almost on the ground when fully lowered, have to raise it to go over stuff, just don't drive with it fully dumped.

And they weigh alot.. can get jap mini pumps to run off 1 or 2 batteries, just not super fast but they're small and light.

yeah it is. It's actually a '66 i just found out. His name is Troy. I remmember when i first saw it. My mate was dropping me off at the top of my street in his KE30 panelvan which had a 13B turbo rotary in it. It looked pretty tough dumped on 17's and the like. Anyway, it was like 11pm and i hadn't yet exited the car cause we were too busy talking about stuff. Anyway, we were stopped in the middle of the road which curved out of sight around a bend. We were chatting away, then all of a sudden we saw some lights hit the houses that were adjacent the bend, weird due to the fact it was so late (usually that road is dead at that time) and also we noticed the lights were unusually low, sort of facing down on the grass. Then we saw the vehicle as it rounded the bend towards us. It was too dark to make it out but all we could tell was that it was sitting reasonably high at the rear and quite low at the front, hence the lights facing the ground. Then it looked as though the vehicle swerved but it was a bit weird. We just put it down to us being tired. We thought it was his brother swerving at us mucking around, as his WB ute sits high at the back and low at the front because it is tubbed. We thought "ohhh it's your brother, wind your window down" then as he winded his window down to talk to his "brother" we looked closer in the dark and i said 'hang on a secon..." and with that all of a sudden THE LIGHTS FACED THE SKY!!! TWICE!!! The guy just started jumping as he drove past us!!! We were like "YEAH!!!!" thumbs out the window and a few cheers, you know the usual. Then we looked as he backed it up so that his driver window was horisontally-parallel with my mates drivers window, just one problem, it wasn't vertically parallel... ZOOOOT chsshhh!!! FIXED THAT PROBLEM!
We spoke to him for ages as we asked him about the car and he asked us if there was much going-on in Civic where we had just been. He gave us a visual explanation of how he wanted to make an entrance in civic after he stopped home to get his wallet, VERY NICE! We ended up talking for ages, so long that some lady had walked past us (at 11:30 at night!) and was almost at the top of his street (next one down from mine). We said goodbye to him and he drove off giving us a nice '3 wheel pose' as he scraped the crap out of his rear bumper on the ground. He just left it in that stance as he turned into his street, giving the lady a nice clear view of the undercarriage of his car! It was so funny seeing the look on her face when she first saw it, her jaw dropped and she just stopped her walking and stared! lol. Anyway that's my story, my friend also got so hooked on the car that he is now in the process of putting some fairly beefy hydraulics in his toyota HiLux ute, should be good i can't wait!

Toyrota.. woz the chevy a red color? on 17" billets? If so, have a look at our homepage under members rides, you'll see: Troy - 66 Impala.
He's in Unity and is from ACT.. could this be the same guy? he's runnin air-bag suspension last time i heard and flies a chrome unity plaque in the back window.
BUt it very much sounds like the same car.. duz it make a loud air sound when it dumps? goes "ppssshhhhhh" like a real loud blow off valve.. when you say "jump" did the wheels get off the ground and all ?? be pretty cool site to see.. i aint seen a 3-wheel in real life yet as I haven't tried with my ride yet. Where is Civic?? is that a car hang out or a town near where u live? The hilux on drolics sounds cool, wot brand of hydraulics is he using? and is he installing it himself? Converting the rear to a 4-link or anything?
btw.. got some pics of my bro's MA71 and my MA60 up at:
http://steeko.4t.com
i couldn't be bothered to shrink the size ,, lol
Got a new 'custom lowriding' magazine from Japan.. them dudes are crazy.. put hydro's on just about any car!
peace
