OK,
I am finding out more about what i can do to this type of car. I am trying to find out what are the options.
I know the easiest would be the 18rgeu. Which is what I want but am having a hard time trying to find one of them. So I am considering the others also.
So, what are the engines?
How much rooting around is there to put them in?
will they need and engineers certificate?
what options Need the brake upgrades to pass certification?
Last of all what are the cost of all of these buggers?
thanks guys.
I have searched the forum but not all of the answers I need are in there.

1. all conversions require rooting around. Otherwise it wouldn't be called a conversion. Some just require a lot more than others.
2. Any conversion that will put out more power will require a brake upgrade. Otherwise it might be a break downgrade. and with all these bent celica's around of late, I think it is a dam good idea too.
3. By the sounds of things, you want to go efi. My opinion and it might be biased is to go for a 1G-GTE. Heaps of power, great engine to drive and it isn't all that hard'a conversion. Check out some of the tech articles here for more details.

with the 1g-gte is it harder to insure, and how much of a brake up grade do you need. I do not plan on thrashing this car around as it will be my main getting to work car. I want this engine to last so I am not really looking for a drag unit. just something that is reliable and a bit more punchy then the 18rc. for under $2000

You do not need a brake upgrade provided:
(a) your car was built on or after 1977 (which yours should be), and
(b) the engine you're choosing fits within the 3.0x / 2.5x rule (again you should be fine there).
Having said that, a brake conversion is never a bad idea... however this will have to be engineered of course, and that makes things a little more complex! I can show you my Supra brake conversion if you're interested.
To get my engine conversion legal, I just got a modification plate from Qld Transport (often known as a "blue plate"). It cost me something like $150 from memory. An engineer dude just came around and had a quick look to make sure it was bolted in properly etc, then filled out the paperwork and riveted the plate to my firewall... hey presto, it's all legal now! I expect it would be slightly more involved with something like a 1G conversion, but it's still a fairly straightforward process.
As for engine options, if you want a moderate upgrade for less than $2k I don't think you have many options apart from the 18R-G (fuel injected or otherwise). It's certainly a lot more "punchy" than the original 18R-C, not that that's saying much!

As soon as you change your engine you screwed for insurance. There are companies that do it however they charge for it.
Check with the transport department for your state on the requirements for certification. From what Norbie said, it sounds pretty straight forward in Qld to do small modifications. Bare in mind that with an 18R-GU you still need to sort out EFI fuel and wiring, along with new exhaust and throttle cable. I would still look into the 1G option. Physically it isn't that much more work. Getting it certified might be a little harder though.

as for brake upgrades, I will take a picture of the front disc's when I get it back from the panel shop. It already has ventilated disc's. Not sure about what calipars or pads it has. I might need some help in identifying them.
