Where to buy a W58
|
Mon, 03 February 2003 11:10

Anyone know of any importers that might have a w58 supra box for a reasonable price?
I rang the local importer today and they had one, but wanted $750 for it! This seems to be just a little pricey to me?
Thanks

Japanese Gearbox Importers here in Melbourne recently put up their prices for these items to $695.

Its most likely a W57, but as Rob has shown with his RA40, it could be a W58 also.

How do you know if you have a '93+ W58??
I have a W58 for my 1JZ. (it has a JZ series bellhousing)
I think it may be from a JZZ31 or a NA JZA80.

If you do have one from a 2JZGE, then it would have to be from a 93+ model.

The late W58 (93+) have a kooky looking gear selector extension doover that looks totally different to the earlier W5x boxes, ie the gear stick doesn't come out of the gear box, it hangs off the end of an extension.

The big red fruit is correct. Here's a photo I took of the 93+ W58 shifter housing next to a "normal" shifter housing from a Mk2 Supra W58; as you can see they are vastly different (although interchangeable with some work):

If I remember back to Biology 101, tomatoes are actually classified as a berry, which strictly speaking is not a fruit. Don't ask me to define the difference - that was 16 years ago.

Ok don't some of the RA6X's come with W58's? You could prbly buy a whole RA65 and part everything except the W58 and it would be much cheaper than $1K??
How do you tell the difference between a W57 and a W58, and also is there any difference between the W58 found in the Celicas and the W58 in the Supras (MK2's and MK3's with 7M-GE).
Cheers
Wilbo

Early-model W58's can be had for much less than $1k, but the post-93 models are expensive because they usually come out of Mk4 Supras. It's the law of supply and demand; there are people like me who want a manual transmission for a JZ engine, but there aren't many available. Hence, the price goes up. FWIW I paid $850 for mine a few months ago.
Wilbo: the W58 has a steel sandwich plate, while all other W5x's have an alloy sandwich plate.

Ok, so there is no differance in the ratios or the shifter position between the Celica W58 and a Supra W58?

All W58's have the same ratios to my knowledge, but the shifter position varies depending on the chassis it came out of. An MA61 Supra box will have the same shifter position as an RA6x Celica (same/similar chassis), however the MA70 W58 has a different shifter position and the JZA80 W58 is different again.

W58's have an alloy case and a steel sandwich plate. Definitely steel; I had two of these things sitting in my garage recently, one from a Mk2 Supra and one from a Mk4 Supra.

Hehe, its "sandwiched" in the middle of the box. I didn't know what people were talking about till yesterday
There should be a bit in the middle of the box that looks different to the rest of it, i.e. maybe a dark gray colour with a touch of surface rust...
