Dust cover between gear box and propeller shaft

Hi all,
Went for a drive in the 23, on the way back I started to hear a rattling only when slowing down... Well I finally jacked up the car last night and had a look around. The source for the rattling was the dust cover, made up of two pieces, one larger cylinder that is connected to the gearbox. The other fits inside.
What I want to know is: does the smaller cylinder (that fits inside the one attached to the g'box, close to the prop shaft) actually supposed to be connected to the prop shaft? I think that it should be connected to the prop shaft and spin freely within the other cylinder. If so how is it connected?, how could it have come apart?
Any help greatly appreciated!
Thanks

Yes, it should be connected to the yoke at the front of the tailshaft. It's a press-fit, so it could have worked itself loose over time as a result of vibration in the tailshaft. It's easy enough to fix though; just remove the tailshaft and bash it back into place.
