What fuel should a 4AC use?!? Tue, 04 February 2003 00:38 Go to next message
Hey Guys,

I have been using Lead Replacement Petrol in my sprinters 4AC since I bought it and its worked fine...

But going through the manual last night I noticed the fuel requirements for the 4AC were 'Gasoline with an Octane rating of at least 97'....

Now does that mean it uses Unleaded, preferable somthing like Optimax?! What do the rest of you guys use?

The 97 rating may be for Japanese spec Sprinters (The Japanese have a much better fuel standard than we do here), I have been using Super/lead replacement in mine since 1996, no issues.

The 4AC is not the most stressed motor in the world and a higher rated fuel is probably a waste of snack money.

Depends on when the car was built. Mine being an '85 model ran on super originaly, and now lrp. remember when they brought in unleaded? most (all?) cars then switched to unleaded. So check the built date. I tried mine on unleaded as it was lsited in that booklet the government put out about which older cars could, and it didnt like it one bit. minor tuning didnt make much difference.

Also as mentioned, Japan has better fuel then us (in fact nearly the whole world does!) so those engine may be slightly different. I dont know, just theorising here.

Craig.

A 4A-C will run just fine on unleaded fuel, as will any Japanese engine built after the mid 70's. It may be necessary to run it on premium unleaded though since regular unleaded is much lower octane than leaded fuel used to be. Don't waste your time with that LRP crap!

the 4ac in my sprinter has been running on unleaded since god knows when and it hasnt had a problem, in the manual it says for 4ac 97 or higher just like you said.

When i first got the car i ran a full tank of optimax through it and now it runs much better then before , dunno maybe optimax does having cleaning agents in it but now i just run it on normal unleaded and its fine , but i reakon to run a tank of optimax, i could feel a difference after.

All aus spec 4AC's have stainless valve seats so you can run them on unleaded or premium UL, the only thing to watch for is that standard ULP will cause some pinging, but you can get rid of this by playing with the timing or the better solution is to use opticraps oops i mean optimax (if you dont mind a little H2O in your fuel) or BP5000 or similar higher octane fuels.

p.s...AVGAS WORKS GREAT Smile

Yeah I found that after running ulp that the engine would chug a bit after I turned it off (is this run-on BTW?) Confused a few tanks of BP5000 and it was running smooth... Smile Havn't tried avgas yet Rolling Eyes

speaking of fuels
would methanol work?

ive got a 20L drum and i'm pondering whether to run it through before i put my 4AGE in next week (hopefully)

do u reckon it would make it go better or just screw up the engine ( don't really care)

Methanol has a much lower calorific value than petrol, which means the mixtures need to be WAY richer to make it work. If you just pour methanol in your tank, the engine will be running extremely lean and blow up in no time at all. Even if you do re-tune your engine to suit methanol, it will run like a bucket of crap unless you wind up the boost and/or increase the compression ratio to take advantage of the much higher octane rating of methanol. On top of that you will need different cam profiles and ignition timing to suit the different characteristics of the fuel. In short, forget it! Smile

I ask you how is a policeman going to test youre vehicle on the side of the road...with any accuracy...with cars going past giving off emmisions.....with the only proper way to prove thats its avgas a chemical test or combustion test in a properly calibrated machine in LAB conditions and how are they then going to prove you didnt just drop six bottles or more of octane booster in quater a tank to get the same result? Ever been to a street meet at the drags? It's pretty obvious which cars are running avgas just by the smell. There are cops out there who are aware of this too...

Not what youre thinking Sam Smile, I was running LRP with only one bottle of carby cleaner so no where near Avgas Smile, but I used it in the 3A-C Levin for rallying a lot...helps to have a father who was running a flight school at the time with thier own fuel pumps Smile
