Way too much I imagine. A new engine setup for a Camry V6 is in the $7000 range (got a quote last year).
A 1JZ-gte engine/gearbox combo would cost around $2000 (auto) and produce more power and torque than the S2000 would.
Even a 1G-GTE would go great as an alternative.

I can tell you that my car weighs about the same as an S2000. And I know which one is faster...

I saw a turbo on an S2000 at AutoSalon about 3 years ago. Dunno if the car actually ran though... it looked about as big as the steering wheel. I imagine it would have to be decompressed to buggery to utilise decent amounts of boost.

Oh definetely, they're a very hi-comp engine and very tight.

There was one in Perth, really nice setup with turbo and intercooler from a Lancer Evolution V or something, running factory 11:1+ compression ratio.
They were running like 6psi or something...but still....

is the reason they run high/stock compression so they have good off-boost performance?

wilbo hit the nail on the head, they didn't change the CR cos its a pain in the arse to do (properly).
the thing basically had SFA lag due to the CR...nice concept

The thing is, they're such a good motor NA that to effectively turbo charge them or go high boost is very very expensive.

One of my mates at work own that white Toby s2k that was at the auto salon about 2 years ago. It really hammers. I think it has about 230rwkw on 8psi. Its very violent power delivery when the vtec kicks in at about 5500rpm. Cost him an absolute fortune though. I think its for sale, $70k anyone?
