2TG cam timing

I am thinking I may as well play with this, why not. I have a standard 2tg engine, 88222. 8.8:1 compression.
So Bill said to advance the inlet (3SGE), and retard the exhaust for more midrange. I will get regrind cams oneday, but I may as well experiment.
But this will create more valve overlap. But I know the most important valve event is the closing of the inlet valve. Advancing the inlet cam makes the inlet valves close earlier. I guess experience works better than theory in this area. I will try.

hmm, I dunno. Thankfully the 2TGs have adjustable cam gears from factory, just go a to the next pin over on each, but as you said. Advanced inlet, retarded exhaust.
Actually, wouldn't that give you less overlap?
Good thing you use goo instead of gaskets, as the 2TG cam gears can't be changed without taking off rocker cover

Two things before bed
Firstly,
Jonny, minor typo mate I think you meant 9.8:1 Compression.
Secondly the 88222 head has the biggest lift of any stock 2TG head I am aware of so be careful. These old girls are full impact heads so if the timing is too far out the piston will hit the valve and bugger everything !
This post is more for the newer mambers rather than you Jonny I know you are aware of that
When the 88222 head was released emissions were not an issue so you can bet the stock cam timing is actually the "best" setting I wouldn't be changing it myself. IF you do tho let me know I always like new information.

The pistons I am useing are probably not the 88222 ones, but later. They are deifinately 8.8 and say that on the top. Which means I am missing out on some power

Jonny,
I was once told that on a 2TG every Compression point is worth 10 HP ! No idea if thats true but it came from a well respected mechanic so I do use it as a rule of thumb. That being the case your down 10 HP
Still the 88222 was the "best" stock 2TG released so your probably still doing ok.
If you ever pull the pistons out the Head series number should be on the side

hmm... i thought that the 88222 2TGs had the efi heads with the lower compression (better for turbs) and bigger valves, and the earlier 88220 heads were with the 9.8:1 compression, but then again my 220 2tg seemed dead compared to any other 222 2tg i driven, but maybe thats just 'cause it had done a few too many km's. im sure the 222 has the lower compression but
anyway i guess i'm just dribbling, just wanted to know how you go with the vavle timing trick.
