1JZ sumps Sat, 08 February 2003 02:12 Go to next message
Does anybody know what model and year of auto 1JZGTE powered cars came out with a front mounted sump? I want to know which front cut is most suitable for a MX73 Cressida.

According to the xJZ workshop manual, the JZS147, JZX90 & JZX91 came with front sumps. Hope this helps.

Also, the 2JZ aristo and a Lexus xx300 also came with a front sump, which will bolt up to a 1JZ block.

Cheers

Thanks guys. So all Soarer half cuts definitely would not have front sumps then?

Definately not front sump - Soarer is rear sump, same as JZA70 & JZA80 Supras

Why have most of the newer cars moved away from front sumps?

Does it make it easier to move the engine deeper into the engine bay?

Cheers

The type of sump depends on the crossmember it has to fit over, which in turn is related to the type of suspension used. For example, the Supra moved from front sump to mid sump at the same time they changed from mcpherson strut to double wishbone suspension.

So will any 1jz or 2jz with a front sump be a good fit in an MX83?

When I stuck a 1JZGTE into a VL for my son we built a new sump to suit the required location. It is quite easy as the 1JZ has the upper cast aluminium piece then the lower steel piece.

We replaced the lower steel piece to make a front sump 1JZ from a rear sump 1JZ. While we were at it we increased the oil capacity to nearly 7 litres.

The only tricky part was had to move the oil pickup as well. Hope you can think and measure in 3 dimensions.
