2TGEU Exhaust Advice Needed Sun, 09 February 2003 01:02 Go to next message
I want some help with what size exhaust i should be running on my 2TGEU.
Currently it doesnt have extractors and the front half is 2" but the back half is 2.5".
The guy i bought it of had 3" front and 2.5" back when he was running a 3TGTE in it thats why i have the back half at 2.5".
I also have a set of 2" extractors to put on it but i want to know if i should get the front half made up as 2.5" to match the back or should i just put on a whole 2" system that i also have.

Dont know if that really all makes sense but i mostly need to know what runs best on a standard 2TGEU. Although it may get worked in the near future!
Any input would be great
Thanks guys

My TA22 2TGEU is running a 2in straight through with no resinator and single 2.5in straight through muffler. the motor has a set of cams and a microtech digi1, it is currently at the dyno shop so i will let you know how it goes when i get it back!! Smile

AFAIK.. 2 inch is pretty much the max you want to go... Any larger than that and you will reduce the back pressure in the exhaust in which N/A cars rely on... I have a 2inch on mine going from 4-1 extractors into a supertrapp.. Seems to work fine!

It's not back pressure one requires for an NA engine, no one wants that. The risk of increasing your exhaust size too much however, is the reduction of _exhaust gas velocity_. Reducing exhaust gas velocity decreases the scavenging effect of your extracters ... and so you may lose some or all of the advantage you had by increasing flow.

Greater than 2" on a small NA car is pretty pointless for this reason.

Edit: spellin'

Exhaust gas velocity is only important in the exhaust manifold prior to the collector. Anything after that has no effect on exhaust gas scavenging, so you can make it as big as you like. The law of diminishing returns applies here though; there comes a point where making the pipe bigger does nothing except make the car louder. 2" is probably plenty for an atmo 1.6 litre engine.

Well it seems you guys all agree that 2" will work well.
But the other stuff you cant agree on so who's correct?

how about an 18RGEU ?? my car currently runs a 2 inch pipe over the diff into a stock muffler, i am going to run 2" pacemaker headers.. Will this be ok flow for the new efi 2 litre? i may just get e new straighter pipe and less restrictive muffler.

Peace

Should be fine provided you have no major mods. The only major bend in the system is the bit that goes over the axle, so make sure this part at least is mandrel bent! FWIW I have a 2.5" system on my 18R-GEU, and it works great but is very loud. I only went this big because I'm going turbo shortly, otherwise I probably would have got a 2" or 2.25" system.
