I am interested in doing an engine swap in an MX83 series Cressida.

Zoom magazine issue 52 did an article on putting a 1JZ-GTE & Supra 5spd into an MX83, which really sparked my interest. However, I have always wanted to own a V8-engined car, but baulked at the old Aussie V8s, so the column article on a Toymods member putting a Lexus 1UZ-FE into an MX83 was an interesting development in a later Zoom issue (54?).
I want to have a manual though, so I'm still lacking some information about a 1UZ-FE & Supra 5spd swap.

I have some questions for you and your clubs members that I hope yoy have time to answer.

These are:

1) Which workshop did the swap on the MX83 in issue 52? Does John Dickeson (mentioned in the article re. clutch installation) work there?

2) Would the owner of the V8 MX83 like to talk/e-mail me about the performance of his car and any mods he is thinking of?

3) Is there a workshop who can do this 1UZ-FE-5spd swap?

4) Where do you go for the best range of aftermarket goods for the MX83 (eg. wheels, body kit parts, exhaust etc)?

5) I like the VT/VX Commodore, but the sight of the negative camber on those rear wheels when lowered and/or under load/acceleraton is enough to put me off. (I think the C'dore IRS comes from Opels in the mid to late 1970s!) From photos I have seen, the MX83 IRS is much more sophisticated, but can you confirm that when lowered or under load, they don't have the same negative camber problem? If not, what prevents this?

6) What do you think about a 2JZ-GTE-Supra 5spd swap in an MX83? Is it much more difficult than a 1JZ-GTE, or have'nt I heard about one because of the cost?

Comments have been made in Zoom that you might as well buy a Soarer rather than drastically modify an MX83; however, the MX83 is more practical and is a real "sleeper", which counts for a lot!. (I also think the MX73 Cressida looks good, as per "Thuderbird 1").

Thanks for your help and I look forward to your reply.

Regards,

Can't help with 5-speed info, however, I can offer some comments about your queries...
I have just completed a 1UZ conversion into our MX83 (still auto, however) and can vouch for it's practicality when compared to a logical alternative (Soarer) as we just sold a Soarer to do the Cressida...The Cressida isn't as nice as the Soarer, but has lots more room (in cabin and boot) and is a lot easier for the wife to park.
Oh, and yes it goes O.K Smile

Cheers.

Making a 1UZ manual is quite an expensive proposition (one that puts most people off), the bell housing / flywheel (not sure what else) is about $1k, and then you have computer issues, trying to trick the computer into not caring about the auto that went missing or going aftermarket = big$$$.

Not trying to put you off, just letting you know there is a fair bit to it!

Cheers

exactly... as michael said, buy V8Cressida's one off him. It goes great, i've given it a hit round the block and would love it as a daily driver / sleeper. Very nice looking car too with big wheels and nice colour.

Do you guys mind? My wife and I are currently negotiating (amongst ourselves) to buy Darren's car, if it's still available...To give our other one a "brother" (and me something to drive if/when I sell the Corolla).
Yes, we would be crazy enough to have two V8 MX83s in the garage...so don't go giving people ideas! Razz
Besides, Darren's is an auto...

Find a nice engine and gearbox, either supra or R154. Use aftermarket EFI and you won't have any problems. The money you save just buying an engine can be used on the gearbox, clutches and bellhousings. As for computers an aftermarket one is much easyier to wire up than a stock unit so you will save a lot of time/money their even though the outlay for the computer will be more.

Oh yeah,
Michael - I finally got to drive my fairlane home yesterday Very Happy(only took 2.8 years). In that time I helped 6 other people complete their cars in a matter of weeks! and a boat.

I don't know how well it runs yet as I only had 3rd gear to drive home in (my shifter doesn't have enough room to move down to first) and I haven't installed the gearbox controller yet. Yes this may be hypocritical coming from the guy who makes and sells them. I just couldn't be bothered putting it in. But it least it sounds nice with the 3" exhaust and only 1 straight through muffler. Very Happy

I'm pretty sure Dellows and CRS make 1UZFE->W58 and 1UZFE->R154 bellhousings. I know Carbontech do. http://www.carbontech.com.au

Yeah now the only thing you have to decide is which body part to sell to fund this conversion!

Cheers

Russell,
CONGRATULATIONS!!!
Man, that's been a long time coming! I was actually down at the workshop a couple of weeks ago talking to Erol and your car was sitting there sans interior...That must have been a major effort to get it all back together and running in such a short time!

Give me a ring and we'll tee up a time to "check each other's cars out" (check the thread in ACT/WA/NT members about the meet on 26th Feb) because I'd like to see your car's exhaust system! (I'm thinking of modifying mine...)

Cheers!
