18RC timing chain replacement

Ok, I have been told that to replace the timing chain on an 18rc, you need to remove the head and the dizzy and sump and stuff, this seems a bit of overkill just to replace the timing chain. Is it necessary to remove the head etc. or can I just take the timing chain cover off and do it that way?
Thanks

Well you definitely don't need to take off the cylinder head to replace a timing chain! You'll probably have to remove the rocker cover, but that's a whole lot easier.

i tried replacing the timing chain without removing the head. i could get it all off alright but found that i could not get the cover back on again as the new chain was in the way. as i could not be stuffed taking the head off i chopped a piece of the cover off and bolted it on seprately. not the best way but it worked temporarily. i have since blown that motor up and am getting another one.
i suggest to just take the head off and do it propely in the first place. its a real prick of a process but it will save a lot of trouble later down the track, and change both chains as well as the chain guides otherwise it may give you further trouble.

Christ, if I have to take the head off, I may as well get a shop to change the timing chain as it will be a lot quicker! Why do they make it so bloody complicated to replace a bloody timing chain

that piece of the front timing cover that gets in the way of the chain is a bitch! its like just one little useless lip on the edge of the cover FFS!
what we did to get around this was to not join the chain, fit the chain with the join up the top and stick a bit of wire in each end of the chain, then we dropped the chain down far enuff to get the timing cover on past the slack chain and then lifted the ends of the chain up and then joined the chain.
was a couple of years ago now thats as much as i can remember.

After replacing both timing chains on my 18rc 2 weeks back, I can say, if your going to do it, do it properly. Yes the people at toyota were smoking something when they decided that you'd need to take the head off to replace a bloody timing chain but, if you do it properly then at least you really have the right to bitch about it then. My motor had eaten it's top chain guide, and broken the botom chain guide.
To be honest, not only did I pull the head off, I removed the whole engine, much easyer to work on and heaps quicker than stuffing around having a bitch of a time getting at all the bloddy bolts you cant see, hidding behind the fuel pump and air con. Anyway, it's crap design, but it does work at least.

I think I paid $20 each for the new timing chains and probably about $30 for the other bits from pick a part, so they weren't new, but they didn't have teeth missing or in the case of the guides snaped in half and eaten.

You can go to repco or autopro or most other auto shop for that matter and buy a new kit for 18r's in it you get upper and lower chain and all the guides when i bought mine about 4-5 months ago it cost me about $70 from autopro i didnt see the point in frigging around with old chains when the engine was apart anyway.
