Argh.. removing sheared off bolts. Wed, 12 February 2003 05:08 Go to next message
Hi all...

Just pulled the inlet manifold off the engine to try and solve a vaccum leak.

While doing so the three of the bolts that hold it to the exst manifold (its a 18R) sheared off right at the bottom of the thread.

I cant use multigrips or anything like that to remove them because there isnt any shaft i can get to.

I really dont want to drill them out either because the exst manifold is cast and itll be a bitch to tap new threads.

Thanks.

what you need to do is drill a small whole in the bolt, making sure you do it dead center. then you need to get a bolt removing tool. ( you can get one of these from any hardware shop or super cheap). the tool is similar to a drill bit but its thread is chunkier and in reverse. you slowly turn it inward and when it gets a firm hold it should start to turn the bolt.

Well that is what it is meant to do. give that a go.

its called an "easy out"

might make trying to explain it to the local shop guy a bit easier.

if you do have to drill it out, dont worry, its easy enough to tap, and then just use a recoil kit.

Another idea might be to just replace the manifold?
I'm sure it'll cost about as much as the easy out, or less than the recoil kit!

Or just get extractors!
