on one of the rego plates on the firewall it should tell you everything you need to know about the standard car (engine type, trans, hell even the cars exterior and interior colour scheme!)
i can always freak people out by saying "show me ya engine and i can tell what code it is by just looking at it" and their like "oh yeah sure, you think you know it all toyota boy"

81 Corona... Is that the round-ish liftback model?
Have a look at your compliance plate and read the engine name.... Should be something like 1S-C....

It could be a 1S-C, but if he's REALLY lucky, then he might have the awesome and lusty 1X Misfire.

Well as i can see, the 1X is a poor quality engine. which is why i was thinking of getting a new and better one to put in.
but i dont know what good engine to put in a corona would be, that is why i was asking if anybody could give me a direction to which kind of engine i should be looking towards of getting.

... the only thing worse that a corona with the starfire engine.... is the 4cyl commodore with the same engine.... what a piece of crap the bombadore was!!!....
Jarrod, i think the question is.... how much do you wanna spend on the car and is it worth doing it up... i suppose a modified corona in your year model would be unique. I am not sure what would bolt up to your engine. I am assuming a 18RG should be a pretty easy fit since a 18R came in the hatchback version.
i bought a twinky for $1K.... which, i thinks is a pretty good base to build up a car since it is already is injected and has 4wheel disc brakes....
if you really like coronas........ why don't you pick up a cheap 83-86 Corona with a 2.4L injected motor.... i think you can pretty easily fit a 1J in it
dunno, just some ideas, i think there are people who know coronas better than me.... i am just a rolla fan

if what u say by "pretty easily" means "a lot of work" then yeah i would tend to agree.
Jarrod check this link out this might give u an idea http://www.geocities.com/keirinandrae/ComaProject/ comaproject1.htm
but it would be awesome if u did the rotor conv, goodman and i are eager to get some practical experience with rotary engines.
if not you could always sell it and buy a car like caylums *choke*

I don't think he was having a dig at the man, its just a matter of reality! Is it worth putting money into something that you will never get out and also when it would be a lot easier to sell and upgrade to a slightly different model (it all comes down to how much you love the car and what it is worth to you).
Also 1J I don't think so...without a big shoe horn!
A 1G-GTE would probably be nice tho.

The same can be said for practically any car modification though - you never get your money back. That's not the reason you do it though, most people do it because they want to build a car they can enjoy without having to fork out $$$$ for a new/newer car!

Yeah but do you polish a turd or start off with something less turdish in the beginning. Not knocking Coronas in any way!
Once you start engine transplants etc the initial cost of the car is usually not that big a deal.....
Just saying he should consider what $3k will get him (an engine transplant or a new car?) and which he will be happier with in the long run.

well before everyone deciedes what jarrod must do, i think its pretty obvious. he asked about getting a new motor for his car so he wants to keep the one he has got
keep da suggestions coming.
a rotary would be a crazy conversion, dare i say the only '81 rotary powered corona ?
BTW jarrods car is in very very good nick, very clean inside and out, just over 100k original so it would be a good base for a modified car

As I see it, the only way is up...If you are, indeed unfortunate enough to own a Starfire 4, you would probably be making an improvement if you put a 4K in it! (O.K, not really, but you get what I mean).

well i just checked to see how man k's its done and its 115k's
i bought it when it had done 108k
so i think thats pretty good for 22 year old car.

I also like the look of the RA23 Celica. OLD SKOOL. which is what i like.

yeah i agree with ya guys...
i am not saying the corona is not worth modifying.....
truth is, you lose money on cars... period....
i don't think you should get worried about losing money on modifying cars.... you do it because u enjoy it... it is part of the journey, not just the end product
i was just putting my 2cents worth in.... for a little advice about ease of transplants... that is all
look at it this way.... you might lose money on modifying cars.... but see how much you lose on a brand new car after 5 yrs... it would be alot more than a $5K transplant
my father-in-law has spent over $7K over the last 4 yrs just on maintaining his vw passat turbo.... and that doesn't include the depreciation from $48K to $30K during this time
i much rather drive a uniquely modified car with character than drive something off the showroom floor

and.... rob RA40....
no... saying it is a unique project was NOT a dig
i mean it sincerely (despite the fact that i previously got constantly bagged for own an excel)
modifying cars is all about being individual.....
otherwise, we'd all be just ricing up civics

go the xt130.
my friend had one of these - for quite a few years - it got punished within an inch of its life but kept going - the only thing he used to change was brakes/rotors ect to keep it going - he went thru 3 trimatics (manual shifting) and never changed the oil - used to leak thru the sump gasket badly, so just kept filling it up.
it gave in one day when it threw a rod - but that would have been after at least 100,000km of punishment.
so, although the 1X may not be a quality engineered motor, it lasted ALOT of punishment for many years.

i know... it is almost indestructible
it is just a gutless engine, that's all....
though, i still reckon an 18R or most R series engine would out last it

i've got a pic of the previouse model corona with a rotor in it, looks awesome. email me if you want the pic. GO THE XT130! lol i have one which i just dumped 50mm at the front and the back, well, the cut springs from the TA22 were a tad too short so it's on the bumpstops. I'll be getting some higher ones in soon though but guess what? On the bumpstops it's still legal ride height! Go Toyota Engineers! Looks stuff'n dumped but the cops can't do squat! (well except if they see me bouncing down the road on the 'stops lol) I put my 17 inch chromies on it from the TA and a big 3A Racing 'drift exhaust' and it looks tough as nails. I'd put a rotor in it myself if it wasn't my run-around for my OTHER ROTOR! lol. Yeah do it up for sure, trust me they look tough done up, i'm even thinking of re-spraying it black, gold wire-spoke rimes with whitewalls, and putting hydro's in it, but we'll see about the cash situation after ROTATR the second is on the road catchya\

GO THE XT130!! there a kick arse little car. i think the sedan lookes tough! mines lowered 25mm front and rear. i plan to put an 18RG in mine using the RT132 liftback mounts cause everthing bolts straght in and needs no engineering! i currently have a fully worked 1XN in at the moment and it may not b a power house, it still beat a '96 lancer, mind you the lancer was the carbie model and it was stock apart froma body kit but i dont think that makes you go faster....lol.

Hey fellas, this my first post
I have a good old 76 corona with a 4sp manual
which I just put in, but I want more power.
It has an 18r standard looking engine. The block colour is blueish green but is It true that a black block 18r will go harder? if so what are the differences between the 2?

i think you have been misinformed, the colour of the block has nothing to do with the version of the engine
the early model 18R without the C designation ie no pollution gear should go much better than say a 18R-C from a celica
but in the end we are talking about the 18R here, a better option is the 18R-G, this is the twin cam version of the engine, it has twin cams, crossflow head and 2 side draft carbies (also comes in a EFI version) and significantly more horsepower than the good ol' 18R

Right, so there are no variations in the 18r blocks,
no different crank or bearing variations?
Just wondering why my mates 75rona has a black block
and goes a damm sight better than mine with the same
head. The only difference I can find is the transaxle
0-4 ratio where as mine is 0-12.
Ofcorse mine may be just in need of a reco

to answear my question properley
Yes I'm fully aware of the pecking order 18r-c, 18r, 18r-g etc,
I dont want a big twin cam petrol guzzler right at the moment.
I just want the most out of my 18-r
