ST-185 or ST-205 box to replace RAV4 manual box? Wed, 12 February 2003 17:14 Go to next message
Just wanted to know if either the ST-185 or the ST-205 gearboxes could be used to replace the RAV4's stocker.

On RAV4World.com I talk to a guy from NZ who has done this conversion, but he's a right racer with no conception of 'normal' driving. His philosophy on the box is "throw it in and race it". Shocked Not much of a help...

How are these two gearboxes different to the RAV4 (I'm guessing it's out of an All-Trac Celica)? In your opinion, is the stock RAV4 gearbox good enough to handle the power of a turbo, or does it need strengthening/replacing?

What is involved in getting a gearbox strengthened?

Answers to any or all of these questions appreciated, just so I know where I stand with this project, and how much to shell-out (if any) when the time comes. Rolling Eyes

I wish it were that simple - I don't have the tools (and very little time) to drop out one box and replace it with another by myself. On top of that, I don't have the mechanical knowledge or the confidence to do this job here. I'm just looking for a guide as to how it would fit as a straight swapover from my stock box.

There was a Yellow Turbo Rav4 in FF's many years ago, and I think he used a V6 Camry Box from memory...

Yeah when I read it, Rolling Eyes I though something similar.... I found the article... Real old as it's still got Fast Fours and Rotaries on the cover!... But the guy who own's it was a Toyota Mechanic, says V6 Box is stronger and beefier internals, and the transfer casing bolted up... I would be worried about the transfer casing on a hard launch.

Nar, It wouldn't be, this issue is about '95 vintage, way before most people even thought of the Net a useful for anything other than porn Laughing

I might have a chat to the guys at AVO in Melbourne - see what advice they got to offer (if any) and go from there...

Why don't you just keep the original box and just worry about it if it breaks? No one knows what sort of potential lie within, you can be a pioneer!

It all comes down to driving style as well, look at Nark's Celica, he drives like a maniac (his own confession) yet he has managed to make his T-series diff last the whole time he's had a 1GGTE...most people wouldn't give it that long at all! Especially since he's upped the load on them by fitting big rims and tyres!

Because I'm trying to sort out the "if's" from the "definite's" in terms of mechanical breakage due to strain from this turbo upgrade. I don't drive like a hoon either, but there will be times when I get to take this baby down the quarter-mile, and that's when it will be worked at it's hardest.

The difference between 'pioneer' and 'guinea-pig' is measured on the rate of success. I'm somewhere in the middle, with a slight 'pioneer' bias. Smile
