I am looking at an '84 cressida tommorow with a 4m in it. I was wondering what gear box it might have in it. were 4spd autos around then? Is the exhaust manifold on it different to a '74 M motor?

I'm pretty sure an 84 Cressida should have a 5M-E, not a 4M? In any case, 4M's usually have W40 (4-speed) or W50 (5-speed) manuals behind them. Not sure about autos.

84 Cressidas (I presume an MX73) had 5MGEs in them. If this one has a 4M, then it has been put in by someone when the GE died. In that case it could be anything. Of course, the year maybe wrong and it may in fact be a 76-81 Cressida (MX32) which would have had a 4M from factory. MX62 (81-84or85) came with a 5ME.
The 4Ms all had W40s behind them (except for MA46-7, which had a W50), and the autos were a 3 or 4 speed auto, depending on year.
Post June 76 M series engines had different intake and exhaust manifolds to pre June 76 M motors. They will not interchange. Pre 76 motors have the curvy rocker cover, whilst post 76 motors have square blocky rocker covers.

84 didnt have 5mge. 5mge came out in the 86-88 cressidas (mx73). 82-85 had the 5me. trust me that 84 one WILL Have a 5ME.

the 4m i looked at today, had a curvy rocket cover, and it looked like the exhaust manifold came out of the motor just under the rocket cover.
On my M motor th exhaust is way under everything at the bottom of the motor. Will a 76 onwards M motor fit right in with the exhaust i allready have?

84 should be a MX62 / MX63? (MX63 IRS but i'm not sure if we got them here?).

My 81 MX62 is 5M-E and 4spd auto, 3spd plus overdrive (good luck finding a manual they made apparently 300 of them ever).

Cheers
Wilbo

I believe the models changed around 84-85. Either way, they are the correct engines for the correct model designation from factory when released in Australia.
As for exhaust interchangeability, unlikely. The post 76 4M has a single outlet from the exhaust manifold whilst the pre 76 M engines all have twin outlets. The 5ME has a twin outlet manifold but the spacing and diameter is different to the pre 76 M engines so you'll need a new engine pipe if you go post 76 irrespective of which engine you choose.

If you like customisation, and a car with a lead tip and no handling.

Basically, it will phyiscally fit (I tihnk), but will ruin all handling.

And besides, the 5me is a motor NOT worthy of converting too.
Get a 3sge, or 3sgte.
