Platinum or copper? Thu, 13 February 2003 23:52 Go to next message
I pulled the spark plugs out of my 1JZ the other day. They are platinum jobies. Would you recommend sticking with platinum type plugs or just going copper? Considering that platinum plugs are about 4-5 times more expensive.
I know the platinum ones last 100k kms but are there any other real advantages?

How hard are they to get at?
The reason platinium plugs last so long is that they are coated & don't spark as well as copper ones.
The reason they are used widely is for engines were they're hard to get at (turbo Subaru's, V6 front wheel drives) & reduces servicing costs under warranty.
If you want slightly more go, & the plugs aren't too hard to change, then I'd go the coppers.

It seems that a few 1J owners going the copper route as they seem to foul up easily, and are much cheaper to replace.
Champion Gold are apparently one of the best (Hot 4s review of sparkies on a dyno) and are the cheapest.

If you are after platinums (which only last longer, don't give any extra power) you can get some NGK-R BKR6EP-8. The non-platinum alternative is NGK-R BKR6E-8.

I've got a set of SplitFire Tripe Platinums ready to go into my Soarer soon. They better be good at $120 for six (trade price!). They came up most powerful platinum plug during tests.

Wagonist, 1JZ plugs are dead easy to get to. Just remove the plug cover, unbolt the coil packs and you're set. 10 mins work tops.

I am currently on my 2nd set of copper plugs and haven't had any complaints (apart from them lasting ~10,000km). Not too bad condisering the pain I put them through Razz

I reckon with the amount of time most of us spend under our bonnets, changing oil all the time etc, it's not too hard to replace the plugs every 2nd or 3rd oil change.
It's a good opportunity to keep an eye on your plugs condition too.
Plus I have too much trouble paying $20 an more per spark plug.

If you are going to run any sort of boost keep away from any of the Platinum or Irridium types as these will break down under boost , I have tried these types on different turbo cars and have had no luck , The plugs I use and have had no trouble with are NGK-R and DENSO .

Same happened to a customer , he come in with his R33 complaining it breaks down as soon as he hits about 8LBS boost , I asked if he had new plugs and he said Yes I just paid a fortune for a set of iridium's , I told him to pull them out and I put a set of $3.00 DENSO plugs in and run it up on the dyno , PROBLEM FIXED !!

yeah I think 6 ngk's for the 1g cost me about 21$ or something like that, hell I think I'll change em every 2nd oil change. not too expensive.
