New rotors, use Metal King bendix brake pads? What do you think? Fri, 14 February 2003 07:36 Go to next message
I've just bought a set of DBA Slotted rotors for the MA61($127 a side) and can't find any other pads apart from the Toyota ones and some Metal King Bendix pads?

How hard do you think they bite your discs? I'll be happy if i get about 3 years of life out of the new rotors. Braking is my main priority.

Anyone using anything else on the MA61?

Have a read of the DBA thread on brake pads here

http://www.mrtrally.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ ID=36

you should get a good idea of what is good and bad. Iin fact the Bendix don't get much of a rating, probably go with RB74's from Racebrakes.

Cheers

Yeah, cheers, i read that the other day, interesting but I would almost bet my life they don't make any for the ancient ma61.

Those manufacturers only cater for WRX's and new models like shite Commodores.

Be wary of MRT , they're well known for charging heaps for labour, so make sure you get prices on their products, they're not terribly popular with the Daihard board Wink so I could be biased on that.

...wasn't there a pad manufactuer called "super green" or something that was supposed to be good?.

I think they might have been a type of Bendix pads? Like they make them in different colors to suit different levels of abuse? Not 100% tho.

I believe Racebrakes (which are not part of MRT etc, the DBA forums are simply hosted on their site) will make pads for anything, just bring an old one in!

You guys are talking about EBC Greenstuff.

Bendix have stopped making Metal Kings because they arn't allowed to manufacture pads with asbestos.

They now make Ultimates and Advance (which are their base pads) pretty crap actually.

Car shops are allowed to sell them up until the end of the year. Thankfully some wharehouses still have some asbestos pads left and I'm getting some of the last sets!!!!

Good old asbestos! Absolutely nothing beats the heat capabilities and properties of asbestos pads apart from carbon fibre but I don't have that much cash Very Happy

Metal kings really chewed discs on my range rover and at $255/disk not impressed. plus they dont seem to work until warm. Using standards, good stopping, no fade (2 ton plus!) good wear. They have AP calipers and I found some english race pads for it that were great but only lasted 8000k's and were 150- pounds but treated the discs like they were gold.

Personally i would go with ultimates if you are a bit of a BLAT type person (Brake Late and Turn) metal kings are good except they squeal a heap. Ultimates will cope well with punishment. At work we have this stuff that we spray on the back of the pads to help in the squeal dept. I t is made by WURTH and it is called (funnily enough) Anti squeal. Works wonders. If you can only get metal kings just champfer the edges of the pads plus put on the anti squeal stuff and you should be ok.
I am running metal kings on my rolla and the discs aren't yet showing any signs of being chewed and the work fine at any temp. 1st application in the morning they stop me reall good cos if they didnt it would be a tbone with sheppartons peak hour traffic Laughing
The best place to get bendix pads from is ABS otherwise try repco or burson. dont go to autobarn cos most blokes there wouldnt know the dipstick from the air cleaner(no offence if anyone here works there)

Dba rotors are pretty good when it comes to wearing out. i have seen some original fittament discs on au1 falcons and most daewoos need replacing after 30 000 k's
Those DBA rotors get used on all the highway patrol cars when their discs wear out and I have never heard of a problem woth them!

I used a set of EBC greenstuff when I used to have ma61 rotors+calipers on the front of my ae86, and they seemed to work quite well, better than metal kings. Just whatever you do, don't EVER use bendix standard on ANYTHING - they're a freaking hazard! Evil or Very Mad

For cheap asbestos bendix pads ie Metal King, Ultimate, 4WD whatever, PM me. I can do my best to sort you out with a good price, if we've got the right set still in stock. As the thread says earlier, we have to get rid of them.

BTW The cops use DBA slotted (not xdrilled) rotors and Bendix Ultimates. I'd say that'd be a fine stop-for-your-bucks combo. Quite sure the Bendix is not half as good as greenstuff though:)

edit: we don't have Bendix Standards- they all went back to the factory:)

I have Metal King plus's in my 323GTX (running on VR-4 rotors)
and they lasted a good 20mins on the track before starting to fade. I think the mazda weighs just over 1100kg so it's no lightweight.

And I have EBC greenstuff pads in my EVO, I haven't had it on the track but the brakes have stood up to some fairly spirited driving without any issues. I think they are harsh on rotors (they still lasted 3yrs and the pads are 1/2 worn), but at $60 each I'm not to bothered, and don't believe the "No dust" crap.

I'm using EBC greenstuff on my MA61, and blackstuff on the back (greenstuff not available). Bendix is the Hyundai of brake pads - they do the job, but they're nothing special. EBC pads are definitely a much better option if you're after braking performance.

I went to fit my new discs this arvo afetr being given the correct pads from Auto One! Mad Mad Mad
They're god dam cressida pads!! He gave me DB281's and I need DB265's after I removed the current pads.

Not happy with all this stuffing around, its taking me ages to get it all sorted.

I'll return those metal kings and see if I can get some EBC Greenstuff. Norbie, how much did you pay for them?
A price for the fronts and the backs(blackstuff) would be great.
You running stocker discs or new ones?

Cheers thanks guys for the info. Its so difficult cause no brake place knows what they can get, or whats even made for the MA61.
Their books and databases are crap! Mad

I can't remember how much I paid, it was a while ago now... something like $300 rings a bell though? I bought new DBA slotted rotors at the same time.
