How long can a 4age last? Fri, 14 February 2003 12:37 Go to next message
Ive got the 100kw red top MAP 4age, and im starting to blow smoke above 5000rpm Sad

Like many of you, for about 2 years i have taken my car to redline about every gear and loved every minute of it. However as the rings (im assuming) are starting to go, i was wondering just how long the engine can last, or what sort of power degredation im looking at.

Should i baby it?

ive got no smoke at startup.

Cheers for any input

either take it easy or rebuild it. If you continue to push it to its limits and its already blowing smoke i can assure you it wont be long until you damage something severly. or alternatively buy a new engine.

And does it eat (much) oil?

More commonly it will be the valve stem seals that are on the way out, do a compression check, but generally my engines last about 2 years with plenty of punishment (IF RUN IN PROPERLY) then its time to give them a freshen up

my aunties 100kw redtop goes like the clappers, its got 274000 on the clock, regular service and good driving and you can make them last forever.

ok thanks.

How much is a compression test?

Im using a little oil, maybe a 1L every 2-3months, but i think its dripping most of , not burning.

done just under 200k, still pulls pretty hard all way to redline.

What i really want to know, is that now its blowing smoke, is it going to get exponentially worse over the next year?

Cheers

1L over a couple of months isnt too bad but what oil are you using? if its a synthetic then switch back to organic...something like penrite 30 isnt too bad, the 4A engines tolerances suit a slightly thicker oil and synthetics will tend to "burn off" a lot more

As for compression test I dont know what they cost but you can pick up the tool to do it form about $50 upward, which Im guessing is about what a mechanic would charge anyhow.

Yes the blowing of smoke will get worse if you dont fix it, sounds more and more like a stem seal leak especially if you think the engine is still strong.
