How to tell LSD?

How do I quickly tell if a diff has a lsd?
If I turn a wheel on one side should the other turn the same direction or the opposite? Or what?
Thanks.

The other wheel will spin in opposite direction if not LSD.

Be slightly more thorough - either jack up one side, or get a buddy to hold the other wheel - you shouldn't be able to turn the wheel that's in the air then.

i have a question
when checking for LSD, i heard that a clutch LSD will turn both wheels the right way but a torsen LSD will turn the wheels like a Open diff, ie opposite.
is this true?

The ST205 would've had a Torsen from memory right?

Ok I went and tried this and I can manage to turn one wheel while the other is dead stop. It took good effort to do this and I am a strong person so maybe it is a LSD?

lifting it up on one side isn't fool-proof
a mate of mine with a mkIV supra (lowered a LOT) managed to get stuck with 1 wheel off the ground getting into his driveway. That one wheel in the air must have been doing 50km/hr... but the one on the ground didn't have enough going through it to get him u the driveway

torsens when one wheel is off the ground will turn just that wheel, basically they use a multiplying factor to distribute the power.

well my friends tried this and i am prety sure it works.
get onto like a dirt track, or some sort of slippery surface. get guys to hold the car from the back down, i for got whether to hold handbrake or not
try both and if so both wheels should spin.

With a Torsen (multiplying), one wheel in the air means almost zero torque to the other side (zero times anything is zero).
To get the wheel on the ground to move, lightly apply the brakes and accelerator until both are back on the ground. Brakes give the wheel in the air something to push against, then the diff multiplies that torque to the other wheel.
Or maybe he has a Supra without LSD... but probably not.

Its actually quite hard to tell if your car has LSD in many instances, I remember dad taking his car to 7 different mechanics and asking them to try driving it and try and tell if it had a LSD or not. 4 people said it had, 2 weren't sure and 1 said it didn't, the car did not have one.

The simple solution if the LSD is in the car, rev it up and dump the clutch, two black lines = LSD

While this topic is already in discussion, I'll add another question...
I want an LSD in my car... I was chatting to a dude at Tafe and he reckons that the AE92 GTi Corolla came stock with an LSD... Is this true??? (I doubt it but yeah, whats everyones thoughts???)
If not, what model in the AE92, AE93 series Corollas came out with an LSD??? Was it just the import ZE Levin???

Ben, AE92's came with the C50 box here and the AE93's (SX and GTi) came with the C52, both being non-LSD.
The Jap-spec AE92 GTZ had some models running LSD, apparently the gearboxes for these is the E51.
And then of course there are some from the AE101 aswell.
Regards,
Liam.
