7MGTE Air Flow Meter - HELP!! Sat, 15 February 2003 22:02 Go to next message
OK I buggered up. I was replacing the pipe that goes from the AFM to the turbo, and there was a little oil in there. I believe this is normal, from the turbo. There was a bit of crap inside the AFM and I was advised that I could spray some carby cleaner in there to clean it out.

Put it all back together and started the car and it idled like crap. Give it a small rev and it would bog down and when I backed off it made a popping sound out from the air box.

I'm guessing the carby cleaner crap got inside the AFM so I pulled out the AFM and gave it a blow out and when I put it back in, I snapped the long plastic peice. Sorry my dscriptions are horrible but I'm new at this, I'm learning as I go ! Smile

OK, I spose it could be glued back on, but I don't think that that is wise especially when the turbo is spooling up it could suck it off straight into the turbo...

Where can I get one of these from, and could I use the AFM out of a 7M MX83 Cressida? More likely to find one in the wreckers.

Anyone got one they dont require?

If it wouldn't be the AFM that would cause it to idle rough and bog dow etc, any ideas to what it could be? It was running perfectly before I decided to play with it Rolling Eyes

Umm yeah I've heard that with no AFM it will idle but die with revs?

Maybe plastic welding if you don't find one? (AFM are not cheap form wreckers (or Toyota!) either Sad )

Good luck with it.

Cheers

I think i have an afm for a 7mgt floating around...but you'll have to give me a few days to look..packed in boxes. As for the 7mg afm, they are different types of afm and not able to be substituted. The 7mgte is a 'karmen vortex' type, and yes if it's broke it will give a crappy idle or rev/load probs like you described.
