22r hilux has run on and pinging, what causes this?

My engine runs on, usually on warmer days, and pings when I try to accelarate from about 100kph in 4th gear, also when the pedal is at the point where the second throat is just about to open , I get pinging too.
The motor has done 275000kms, and there is a bit of smoke when I start it up sometimes.
Any ideas? (besides "the motor is rooted!)

Check your ignition timing; if it's too advanced it can cause both of these problems. Another possible cause is carbon buildup, which can be dealt with by pouring water into the engine while it's running at 2-3000 rpm.

The timing is set to 5dbtc as the book says, might have to try the water trick, how much water? I guess it would be just a light spray?

Nope, pour in a steady stream from a jug. As long as the engine is revving a bit this will be fine. It you notice brown smoke coming out the tailpipe, this means it's working (ie the carbon is being dislodged and spat out).

Never heard of that? Water in a motor! Hmm, how does it work exactly do you know?

Hiluxs are notorius for pinging. Use premium fuel, it will help. You don't really want to back off the timing anymore cause it will become real slugish.
As for the water deal i've never heard of that b4 so i cant comment but note this - if too much goes down your motor will not be able to compress it and chances are you will bend a rod.

That's true, but you'd pretty much have to dump a bucket of water down the inlet to make it hydraulic lock. Think about how much air is being consumed by your engine at 3000rpm, and you'll see there's no danger pouring water out of a jug into your engine.
The idea behind this is the water flashes into steam in the combustion chamber, and this blasts the carbon away. It can be very effective if there's lots of carbon in your engine.
