Spark Plug Gaps Sat, 07 September 2002 16:40 Go to next message
Ok well from some good advice from Jamie "MRTA22" i bought myself some colder plugs for my engine and its doing a treat Very Happy
although the big question is how well and long they will last, i'll just have to wait and see but the next matter i want to dive into is about spark plug gaps.

What determines the size the gap should be?
is it better to have a bigger gap? to create a bigger spark?
and in doing so does that mean you need to install a coil with a greater power output?

anyone know the in's and out's of spark plug gaps or any sites which dive into the topic?

The last series of 2TG's was the 88262 headed 2TGEU. This head is Unnumbered on the head itself but the cams are identified by the 88262 part number (????? - 88262).

This 2TG is a low compression High emissions control model and is generally regarded as the dog of all 2TG's Sad It has an offcentre head combustion chamber and is generally avoided.

Curiosity has go the better of me so If anyone can locate the head flow figures or a complete head i would be interested in seeing them or purchasing a head for the exercise. I'm just wondering how much better the other head is (%age headflow)

Thanks,

ok, my auto box is dying, it's in a MK3 turbo supra, from what i have been told it is the same box that is behind 1JZ/2JZ/1U powered cars, is this true?

can i use these boxes? with a different bellhousing of course, anyone have one cheap?

i have also been told that the auto boxes are crap and can't even handle the standard power, and others have told me they are nearly as strong as a W58? what is the truth?

other wise i'm thinking i'll just get a W58, and finally go manual..... (i'm kinda hoping that will happen)
will a W58 handle a slightly more powerfull than stock 7M?

thanx,
c-ya,

Converting RA65 drums to discs Wed, 11 September 2002 15:47 Go to previous messageGo to next message
Okay, who's done it, and what did you need to do? I know the easiest way is to undo the rear crossmember from a Supra and wheel the whole in diff and all, but that isn't feasable when shipping interstate.

I have also been told that the caliper and drum hardware don't hang from universal mounts, so at the least I would need the semitrailing arms Sad

Have those who have done it swapped the brake bias valve? Apparently the Celi has one line that gets divided at the rear crossmember, wheras the Supra one has two lines from the valve.

alternative fender kits for Toyotas Wed, 11 September 2002 21:52 Go to previous messageGo to next message
Finding tuning fender kits is next to impossible for older rwd Toyotas. Handy hobbyist doesn't let this matter stop him - he will install a kit from another brand.
This will work on any old Toyota of course, despite sample photos being model biased.

Here is an example of stone age Ford Escort Mk I fenders bolted onto KP-series Starlet.

I've heard VW Golf Mk I fenders are used on Starlets as well, they could be these - sorry, I'm not absolutely positive.

Does anyone know a good place for me to source some Mitsubishi FTO seats? Either those or Series 6+ RX7, or current model Celica.
I'm looking for some nicer seats for my Celica XX, in that sort of style, but I'm wanting something which is comfortable without all the adjustments.
Basically I want something that I find as nice to sit in as MA61 seats but dont weigh so much and look a bit more modern.

Just wondering if anyone knows about transmission lines coming from a 1jz auto are h/p or l/p?
Will hose clamps be enough to hold on?
Also l/p power steering , i have to put a resovour in will these be ok with hose clamps.....
How far can u run flexible hose on the l/p from the rack to the res?
MOST IMPORTANTLY should i braze fittings on to the end of the existing metal hoses or can i just cut and flare them slightly to fit hose over the top????

How do u flare the metal tranny lines... Rolling Eyes
Dont want my motor/tranny relying on $2.00 hose clamps is there a better solution without calling in the hose dude to make all fittings...

Long inlet manifold is beneficial for low/mid rpm.
Actually even if you tune manifold to say.. 8000rpm, it will be pretty long if it'll be tuned to first reflected wave.
Despite clomsy appearance, this manifold will not restrict high rpm use of this engine.

Has anyone ever heard of this before? I have a apexi f-manage in front of me for a 1j, trying to figure out exactly what it does. I tried to look it up on the web, it appears to be somewhat similar to a fcon, it may control timing also, I can't quite understand the translations of the japanese webpages-they don't translate very well. It is about the size of an HKS fcon, with a harness like an fcon. It also has a smaller box, about the size of a HKS vpc that says"Fmanage Q/N DC qn data converter" This piece has no knobs/buttons/display or anything-just a power light. I'm going to call Apexi tomorrow, just wondered if anyone had heard of these

Shock position? Fri, 20 September 2002 06:31 Go to previous messageGo to next message
What do people think is the best position for shocks on a TA22?
I have a small problem with my new diff and brakes where the shock mounts will foul on the rotors! The guy that is doing the mods for me reckons that it would'nt hurt to move the mounts towards the center of the diff more, making the shocks sit directly up and down! He says this is reconmended for drag cars!

What do you "wise" Rolling Eyes people think about this subject?

As most know, I am in the process of getting my 1UZ-powered Cressida going.
So, it is only appropriate that I give some credit to people who have helped thus far. (These names will also appear on the web-site when the project is completed).
Firstly, Erol who has helped me with this and my last project (4AG into KE70)
KDog - Who gave up his Saturday to come over and give me a start in wiring the 1UZ...Mate, your assistance means a lot, and wont be forgotten!!

The blokes at Carco Exhaust and Automotive in Belconnen... These crazy enthusiasts were happy to take on the conversion and did a bloody good job, without ripping me off. They know their stuff, which helps.

Overall, I've been very happy with the willingness of other enthusiasts to "pitch in" and help with things I've been unable (or not confident enough) to do.

Again, thanks!

1) I want to know how to do the wirings for the 100KW red-top 4age into the sprinter. If there is a someone who have done it before, please pass me some info.

2) For the EFI setup, I'm thinking of running external surge tank, but I want to know what is most reliable and effective set-up ? For the fuel lines, do I need to change to the bigger lines ? HELP ME !! Rolling Eyes

7MGTE Cressida...more info please Sun, 22 September 2002 13:53 Go to previous messageGo to next message
I have been talking about a conversion for the Cressida for a while now I know but this time it's for real. I've spoken to Thunderbird1 about 1JZ conversion into a MX73 like his but it seems WAY too hard for me. I am now thinking more along the lines of a 7mGTE conversion.

Can anyone help me out here and tell me "yes it's a good conversion" or "no don't bother". I would like to talk to people who have done this conversion into a MX73. I've heard it done in a MX83 but wondering if it's similar. I've seen the Jap Soarers of the 80's with them and they are similar bodies so my guess is it's simple.

I will be getting a mechanic around the Gold Coast/ Brisbane area to complete the conversion and wondering if anyone has any recomendations. Also costs. I know I can get the front cut for $2000 but I would also like some ballpark figures on conversion costs.

This conversion will be taking place quite soon if you guys think it's a goer so i'll keep you all posted.

Cheers...Steve

I was filling up my car with petrol the other day, and when i started it up, the fuel gauge rose to about the 1/4 mark, then dropped all the way to nothing... I've driven around 200km so far since then, and only sometimes has it gone up a bit, then dropped again. I'm guessing that a wire is loose or something, but cant figure out where to look. Will the low fuel light work still? or will i have to completely guess how much fuel i have left?

Whats worse, is that i have work tonight... i guess I'll just have to hope i don't run out of fuel! Sad

W50 teardown tips please Sat, 05 October 2002 14:17 Go to previous messageGo to next message
hey guys

i'm gonna pull down my w50 tomoro (still in car at the mo)
the thing whines in 1st 2nd 3rd and 5th
and there is a nice 'tinkle' noise, like 2 pieces of thin metal hitting each other. someone i know seems to think that this noise could be ball bearing from the front input bearing.

thoughts?

anyway, does anyone have any tips for pull it down and inspecting it? anything to look out for?

cheers

Engine options Sun, 06 October 2002 03:48 Go to previous messageGo to next message
With a bit of cash to spend I figure its time to do something with my engine (or get a sub for my Sony Xplod). So far I have a 2" exhaust from the newly replaced high flow cat converter back (the old cat was blocked) and a K&N panel air filter for my 4A-FC engine in my AE92 Corolla. Is there anything else I can do this engine for more horsies or is it worth just upgrading to the 4A-GE? Anyone know how much a recon 4A-GE will set me back? Thanks.

oil pumps Sun, 06 October 2002 10:13 Go to previous messageGo to next message
Well my hybrid 3T-G engine is comming along well.
Just hit a snag, what oil pump should I go with?
I've got a 3T bottom end and a 2TG head.
I'm thinking I go with the 3T pump cause of it being in a larger cappacity engine, although the 2TG pump might be bigger to supply enough oil to the larger head.
any ideas???

20V into offroad racecar Wed, 09 October 2002 23:06 Go to previous messageGo to next message
Im going to be dropping a 20V into an offroad racecar (currently a carbied L16 dato) in our off season and have a few questions.

background - M4 Motec (Pro) with data logging on the way, 1800 kombi gearbox with straight cut gears and super diff in the car, adaptor & modified flywheel, button clutch already secured.

can anyone recommend an importer in sydney to get the engine from?

can anyone recommend coilpacks to use?

what mods need to be done to the motor to switch from fwd to rwd?

the car will be running in heaps of dust - any suggestions on good air filters for dusty conditions?

is there a high volume oil pump available, if so what type?

Cheers.

KE55 Master Cylinder Fri, 11 October 2002 02:23 Go to previous messageGo to next message
I've recently been through 4 KE55 PBR Dual circuit master cylinders...None of which had working rear brakes. Is this problem typical among KE55's? I've considered putting a kit through my original one, but its pretty expesive at $150. Are there any other models that have KE55 compatable master cylinders?

GDV 32/36 Weber => Sprinter Fri, 11 October 2002 08:11 Go to previous messageGo to next message
My intention is replace the factory carb with the above Weber. I'm not doing it to increase horsepower, but simply because it fell into my hands for $40, which includes the adaptor plate.

Are there any pitfalls with just bolting it on (other than getting it tuned), and how should I expect the motor to respond?

On a side note..... as I understand it, K&N air filter are the best, but does the shape of the filter actually make any difference to performance?

5spd internals Fri, 11 October 2002 13:36 Go to previous messageGo to next message
i have a steel case 5spd out of a crown i think (4M from memory)
and the gear on the lap shaft and the gear on the input shaft arent meshing properly and are creating a huge whine.

my q is, is the celica and corona 5spd the same internals (i 'think' mine is a w50 box) and is the 4spd the same as well?

the casings look identical (bar the 5th gear spot).
pics of 4 and 5 spd version here
http://home.oz-enet.com.au/peewee/yoda_boxes.html

any help?

AE 92 air con Mon, 14 October 2002 09:16 Go to previous message
just wondering what other air con setups fit in the ae92?

i have the 20v compressor which fits straight in but looking for the condensor and hoses as the ae101 dont fit.

just if some other setups fit then it broadens my chance of looking for the parts.

thanx.
