aircon in AE92 Mon, 23 February 2004 09:48 Go to previous messageGo to next message
Guys,

Looking to buy an AE92, the one I'm looking at has a 20v installed already - looks pretty good.

One of the issues with the car is that the aircon hasn't been hooked up.
The only thing still there is the compressor itself - there's no way to verify the compressor works.
There's no hoses or anything, and the connectors on the firewall are full of crud.

Question is - how hard is a full aircon system to fit on a 4AGE 20V in an AE92 hatch? Any ideas on how much this would cost?
It had aircon originally, so controls etc are inside.
Next question... who could I get to do it in Canberra? Smile

The power steering pump ain't connected either, but that's another question... Smile

Just wondering if anyone has done this conversion of a ca18det into a ke20,ke25,ke26 and what problems did you have?
Some questions I have are
- Can you mount the motor low enough to fit the gearbox in the standard trans tunnel.

- What gearbox was used is the ca18 box too big?

- When mounting the engine can you leave the swaybar and steering rod without modifing them

- Any other problems to get over?

Cheers,
Ben

Hey All,

Am about to embark on a rebuild of the 1GGZE in High IQ. Can anyone make some good suggestions on a supercharger that we can use as the factory one won't stand up to what we have planned. Also, just before anyone mentions it...NO we DO NOT want a turbo Evil or Very Mad

Also, any suggestions on places to find the engine bits including bearings, etc would be great.

Thanks.

early bearing signs..JZA70 Tue, 24 February 2004 15:03 Go to previous messageGo to next message
What are the early signs of bearing noise?

I know that once the bottom bearings are gone they make a clatter dependant on revs..

What i'm getting is a bottom end knock, between 1000-2000 rpm when cold, it rises with engine revs and completely disappears over about 1800 revs. When the engine gets warm there is no noise whatsoever.

Am i looking at a bottom end rebuild shortly?

Cheers

Oil cooler - effectiveness? Tue, 24 February 2004 21:22 Go to previous messageGo to next message
How effective is the stock oil cooler on the 100kw 4AGE? I've heard it's not a full flow but a purge valve design, I would imagine this would be better for warming up the oil etc as it doesn't get passed through the cooler at lower RPM...

I recently bought a 100kw 4AGE "with everything" and yesterday discovered it doesn't come with the stock cooler (and the sump has been changed so can't put the stock cooler on because no drain back into the sump). The person I bought it off has an almost complete (everything except lines) full flow RX7 setup that he can sell to me (unsure of price yet), how much are these worth? And are they any better? The cooler itself looks okay (2nd hand), a few fins bent and stuff but I suppose that's expected in a 2nd hand unit. On another thread I think Grega mentioned the Earls unit is about $220 (for pickup and cooler)? How would these compare?

With a full flow setup, because all the oil has to run around the cooler, are there any problems with oil pressure etc? Will I need a heavier duty oil pump and all that?

FAQ: 4A-GZE pistons, forged or not? ANSWER = yes Fri, 27 February 2004 17:21 Go to previous messageGo to next message
THe following is the result of some internet searching, and hard evidence research conducted by a higly qualified metallurist and electron microscope specialist.
------------------------------------------

Are the 4A-GZE factory pistons produced by toyota forged?
Some say that they are "semi-forged", some say they are forged, some say they are just coated.

The truth is, that both types of 4A-GZE pistons that have been inspected and tested are indeed FORGED. Both the 8.0:1 type from the early AFM type GZE (MR2) and the latest model 8.9:1 from an AE101 GZE were tested. The early type sourced from a busted MR2 motor, and the late type being purchased from Toyota by myself personally (and verified from a busted piston donated by Mr Shin).

These late model, 8.9:1 compression pistons are available up to 0.5mm oversize from any Toyota parts dealer at a retail price of $100.00

If you would like to see the evidence, please read these threads:
4A-GZE piston thread 1

Ford EA falcon gze boost upgrade? Sun, 29 February 2004 10:39 Go to previous messageGo to next message
I have a 4agze running std boost, I want to get it up to about 11psi.

I heard from a friend that you can use an Ford EA falcon air con pulley instead of the std one.

Has anyone done this before? Does it replace the supercharge pulley of the main fixed pulley? Smaller or bigger?

What would be the main disadvantage for using a fixed pulley?

Porting & Polishing 4A Heads Wed, 03 March 2004 00:21 Go to previous messageGo to next message
As this is my first time doing anything so adventurous on the 4A i thought i would ask some advice.
I have read not to increase the smallport size too much as it reduces airflow. But i was thinking of enlarging it just slightly, maybe 2-3mm in overall radius, so 6ishmm in dia. Is this acceptable, will it make any difference? Or should i just clean up the flashing
Also i havnt figured out squash areas yet, and as i am considering having the head shaved slightly for an increase in compression im not sure what will need to be done there. Anyone for assistance there?

Im only aiming at about 150-160hp from the smallport. 264 cams, underdrive pulley and higher compression should garner this for me i think.

Opinions? Advice?

Tolerable Valve Clearance (4A-FE) Wed, 03 March 2004 02:54 Go to previous messageGo to next message
My wifes corolla had a full engine rebuild 12 months ago, it has been ticking a lot lately. I finally got around to measuring the valve clearances
I11 0.33 E11 0.31
I12 0.28 E12 0.34
I21 0.25 E21 0.30
I22 0.25 E22 0.30
I31 0.25 E31 0.36
I32 0.25 E32 0.36
I41 0.25 E41 0.23
I42 0.25 E42 0.15

According to the sticker on the bonnet
Intake should be 0.15 to 0.25
Exhaust should be 0.2 to 0.3
Are these sizes likely to be causing a problem to the engine or are they not worth the $200 to get them replaced and reground?

Thanks
Andrew

any suggestions would be much appreciated...

hello, as you might know i *blew* my coil the other day and then stupidly went out and bought an AE82 electronic ign coil. stupidly put it in my car without the 82 dizzy and basically the motor was F&^KeED!!!!!backfiring, wouldnt rev about 1500rpm etc.
so in went my makes 86 coil and it ran fine.
so anyways i was wondering if you could change the 86 coil and dizzy to an 82 electronic ign for better relibility/smoother running and performance?
what do i need to change and is it worth it? (im already halfway there)
what gains are there to be had from doing this???

The struts from the AE101 front cut the engine was out of are also on, including struts, rotors, calipers etc.

I'd like to put new discs on the front, was hoping to put slotted & ventilated DBA's on.

Wondering - any other brands that are as good as DBA's?

EDIT: As soon as I post, I find the fkn entry in the DBA catalogue... Rolling Eyes

AE101 front ventilated rotors = DBA 711
Diameter: 238mm
Height: 48mm
Thickness: 22mm
Min thickness: 20mm
Centre Hole: 55mm
Bolt holes: 4

Hi,
I have a 1994 Toyota Camry CSi, and on the dashboard there is a gap for where the indicator lights for the automatic transmission should go, between the tacho and speedo. but since i have a 'cheap' grade this was not included back then. However the higher grade models, CSX and Ultima, had them as standard. Sad

I just want to know if I go to a wrecker and get another instument cluster with these lights already there, and plug it up? would it work? like is the wiring already in the car? Question

I have already put a Digital Clock and Glovebox light into my car, I was able to find some wiring already there waiting and ready to be used Very Happy. However, it can't be guaranteed that wiring will be there for every single assessory Sad

Hey guys,

The steering in my te71 has a lot of freeplay and since its a crappy recirculating ball type this should be a good time to convert to rack and pinion. Im going to be putting a 4agze in the te71 so ill need a ae86/ae71 steering rack? is the ke70 one the same also? has anyone done this conversion before? surely someone has? i spoke to one guy who put an ae86 setup (power steering version) into a te71 and he needed to cut the firewall and change the steering column. So im after the easiest way possible because i want to avoid cutting anything if possible. The cutting is needed because the ae86 setup goes through a different angle.

thanks

dudes,

just looking at a few things with regards to the wiring i need to swap the 22re out and the 18rg in

the 22r alternator is labelled with 3 letters for each wire that runs into the alterator on the plug

the 18rg has only one wirre that is labelled

im going to take a punt here as the remaining two wires is a fifty fifty chance of working properly

so the question is what are the wires for and what happens when i get it backwards ??

the only wire i know is right is the one labelled 'W' as this is the top one and the same on the 22re alternator

and also approx square end dimension (where t/b bolts on)

also, if someone happens to have one off the car at the moment, could they please measure the runner internal dimension where the upper manifold joins the lower manifold? its still oval at this point, so a simple long axis x short axis would be great!!

thanks y'all!
cheers

Indicators are on the fritz :( Thu, 18 March 2004 23:58 Go to previous messageGo to next message
Driving to work this morning... pull in to get some fuel... all is good.

Make a right turn... all is good.
Make a left turn... indicators don't come on.
Subsequent attempts to make the indicators work using stalk and hazard switch. No Go.

Get on freeway, use arm to signal right merge

By habit I used the indicator stalk to signal my next left turn... all was good again, however the indicators went off after about 20secs of flashing...

All is good again now. No more probs for 20mins of driving, but I am not confident that this is a one off!

Using the Arm-Out-The-Window technique at 100k's seems wierd...

Anyone got some ideas as to what could be causing this?
I thought "no worries, fuse." but when they came on again...

Dir Flasher unit maybe?

Cheers.

Digital Display Sat, 20 March 2004 06:21 Go to previous messageGo to next message
Hello,

I was wondering if somebody could tell me a tip / trick for my 2002 Toyota corolla digital display. I know with the ford falcons you can play with the digital display and allow it to show extra functions such as speed, service history, rpm, etc. Does anyone know the steps involved in showing these in a new corolla, if it is possible?

Thanks heaps.

Kristyn

I need to install some biger injectors for my turbo conversion on my V6 4Runner (3VZE). I was wondering wheres the best place to get the bigger injectors and wether it's best to get new or second hand, funds depending. I have around $500 to spend on them and only want to swap them once as they are a bit of a prick to get to. I am using WOLF 3D engine management so the independnce doesn't matter.

I found this picture on a website about toyota injectors, which shows bigger std. toyota injectors should be available with the same plug. But does the valve hole type matter??

Will a v mount intercooler help on a ae86? i have seen this setup in a japanese magazine, a ze engine with a v6 supercharger. The lenght of the piping, the intercooler to the charger was very short since the intercooler was facing up like a wrx, but closer to the radiator support, it was caverd with heat resistent metal from the engine, my guess is the heat, and radiator was facing down V

Where is a good suspension place to go near Parramatta (Sydney) Wed, 24 March 2004 08:17 Go to previous messageGo to next message
OK Guys,
I just got a mad deal on a full whiteline kit for the ol' GT4 and wanted to know if you guys had any suggestions or experiences with suspension places around Parramatta / the hills area to fit and adjust the kit.

The reason I am trying to be careful with where I get this done is that it requires "welding" which worries me a bit...

At the moment I'm looking at BD4's & MRT Rally in Ryde.

Any suggestions or recommendations would be much appreciated.

Alternator Upper Front Bracket 4agze Thu, 25 March 2004 13:39 Go to previous messageGo to next message
Odd request

On the way home last night, started to hear a slight squeeking noise comming from the front left. Seems as though the front alternator support arm has snapped.

Having never sourced a bit like this before is the bracket standard across 4a engines? Would a jap wreckers be my best bet for locating one?

thanks

fuel tank overflow &bastard plug Sat, 27 March 2004 04:33 Go to previous messageGo to next message
The last 2 times that I have had a full tank on a hot day the fuel has started to pour out the filler(even when the cap is on) I expect this is due to the vapour expanding in the heat and pushing the liquid out because when i rock the car the vapour bubbles out the filler and the level goes down. I think the vent to the charcoal canister was supposed to deal with this... The line to the canister appears to be fine (no blockage), so do problems with the canister ever occour? Does it need to be replaced? or can it be serviced in some sort of way? (failing this, maybe my problem is elsewhere?)

Also, any tips on how to crack the oil fill plug on my diff? Ive tried for ages to undo it, from using a large socket to a big shifter to swearing at it loudly but it just wont budge! (it is a normal sort of bolt that turns ccw right?). It looks like at some stage someone has painted the diff part of the axle red, maybe the paint is jamming the thread or something??

car is aus sprinter, 4ac, s diff

cheers guys

TA22 with RT132 struts: Dampers to use? Sun, 28 March 2004 09:45 Go to previous message
Refer the following diagram (regards Grega):
http://forums.toymods.org.au/index.php?t=msg&t h=26807&prevloaded=1&rid=3250&S=74339a 0231221cf4c765d919a8b1a9de&rev=&reveal=&am p;start=60&count=60

Using the standard strut in TA22 requires shortening of the strut body below the spring seat by 15mm to maintain the standard lower strut length.Additionally lower springs than standard will be used, incorporating a ~30mm drop (ie. standard off-the-shelf lowered springs).

Obviously an OEM RT132 insert would risk bottoming out with ~2" taken out of its travel. Any alternatives available which fit RT132 pattern but 2" (~50mm) shorter?
