IGN coil problem-HELP

was doing work on my car today and encountered a bit of a problem->car wont start.
after a bit of investigation it was found that the external resistor wasn't hooked up correctly and must have fried the coil. power goes into the coil, no power out, ground was also tested and is proper.
so its off to recpo to get me a new coil but i have only 2 questions.
is there a specific coil for a 4ac or will all 4 cylinder coils work?
can i use an internal resistor or do i still have to run external?
